There's truth to that, but even Chelsea needs to get a first-teamer for that price tag. It also seems like they haven't splashed the cash the last couple of years quite like they did before, but I haven't looked up the actual numbers.

Apparently Luke Shaw ate all the pies and washed them down with several pints. Looks like some sloppy guy they found in a pub.

Breaking reports that Thibault Courtois is headed to Real Madrid for around €35M. Not a lot of money. Chelsea just paid €80M for Kepa Arrizbalaga. Yet Madrid already has an outstanding keeper in Keylor Navas, whose distribution ranks among the best in the world (and his shot stopping is pretty sweet too). I suspect Keylor's going to move, because why spend the money otherwise? If so, three Champions Leagues in three seasons as a starter is a hell of a legacy to leave behind.

Yeah, this seems like a lateral move. Navas came up huge in the UCL last few rounds last year. Courtois seems to be benefiting from some high profile good games in the world cup.

I've never understood why Real Madrid has been so keen on replacing Navas, whether it be De Gea before or Courtois now. I can't help but think that Navas suffers from being from Costa Rica rather from a country with a greater soccer pedigree.

I wasn't that familiar with Kepa, but supposedly Real was trying to line up a move for him in January and Zidane said no. Not sure about that since they could have gone after him instead of Courtois this summer, but I guess the new manager has his own preferences. Still, seems pretty lateral like MWM said, other than Bilbao ending up with all the money. Maybe they can buy Navas and complete the circle?

Bilbao won't sign anyone who's not Basque.

Sleeper club for Navas' services: Lyon.

After a flurry of activity today, Fulham became the first promoted team to spend over £100 million in transfers.

No idea how it all fits together, but that's an impressive amount of business.

EPL kicking off with Man U vs. Leicester, which means plenty of Jose Mourinho interview clips in the pre-game show. I'm waiting for the Mourinho TV channel.

Maybe it's just me, but with the gradient on the Man U kits, from a distance they look like a bunch of grandpas with their shorts hiked up.

And damned if the sloppiest-looking man on the field didn't score what turned out to be the winning goal in today's EPL season opener. Maybe me mocking Luke Shaw is good for his game.

    Brighton beats ManU. Mourinho's impending meltdown in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ...

Interestingly Brighton bought an entire starting team of new players over the summer and only two of them got into this game (one as an injury replacement).

    Re: 2018-19 Euro soccer thread

    A few EPL thoughts:

    - Tottenham strikes me as the team most likely challenge Man City for the title. Liverpool's the hot pick, but Tottenham is loaded and built to win in a number of different ways.

    - Chelsea's already kind of fun to watch under Sarri. Might be too exposed at the back, but that's fun too.

    - Arsenal started with a brutal schedule, and missed some gimme shots that could have beaten Chelsea, but it's going to take a while to figure out just what the post-Wenger team is. Top four seems like a reach and they might slide out of the top six.

    - The mid-table looks a bit better. That should make for more upsets and more tight contests. Expect one of two of them to be challenging for Champions League spots deep into the season (not that they'll get them).

    - Huddersfield, Burnley and Cardiff look like they might be in for long seasons.
