Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. -- Carl Sagan (Pale Blue Dot)

My wife used to work with Koko the sign language gorilla 25 years ago. Her main job was working with Ndume a male that they got from the Cincinnati zoo who was a problem gorilla and not a good zoo animal, the Gorilla Foundation hoped he would mate with Koko.
But it never happened, when Koko died a few years ago the zoo demanded (and got) Ndume back.
Today she was in Cincinnati and got to see him with his current keeper behind the scenes, He recognized her and smiled and then acted playful like he did when she spent her days with him.
Pretty awesome in my book

A teen buys repossessed storage units at auction, then gives the contents back to the original owners
Shane Jones was looking to earn a little extra cash last summer when he stumbled upon YouTube videos explaining how to make money in a way he didn't know existed: buying the contents of repossessed storage units.
When renters stop paying the monthly fee, everything inside a storage unit can be put up for auction.
The videos explained how to bid online for the contents, sight unseen. Shane thought it would be like a treasure hunt of sorts.Shane was surprised when he won, he said, but when he went to his newly acquired unit, he realized right away that he shouldn't keep the items.
As he sorted through the household goods, stuffed animals and personal mementos, he remembers feeling sad - especially when he found documents belonging to the original owner.Shane didn't expect that anyone would find out about his new pastime, but then word got out in late April at South Kingstown High School, where he attends. School district officials posted about his generosity on Facebook and local television stations began calling.
"We're delighted to see one of our students doing such a wonderful thing," said South Kingstown Principal Chip McGair.

A Checkout Line Where Slower is Better: Supermarkets Open ‘Chat Checkouts’ to Combat Loneliness Among Elderly
https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/a-ch...rmarket-jumbo/
1.3 million people in the Netherlands are older than 75 years—and one large supermarket chain is making sure they’re not getting too lonely in their elder years.
The Dutch government with its campaign, ‘One Against Loneliness’, has galvanized organizations, towns, companies, and individuals to find solutions. The grocer giant, Jumbo, is doing their part with its innovative chatty check outs.
The idea for the ‘Kletskassa’, which translates to ‘chat checkout’, originated more than two years ago—and in the summer of 2019 the first Kletskassa was opened in Vlijmen in Brabant. This resulted in many positive reactions from customers—and now Jumbo is expanding the initiative further: By this time next year, there will be chat checkouts in 200 stores across the country where people can go for a conversation. When choosing the stores, areas where loneliness is a major factor are carefully considered.
Colette Cloosterman-van Eerd, CCO of Jumbo and the driving force behind the National Coalition against Loneliness, is closely involved in the initiative. She says, “Many people, especially the elderly, sometimes feel lonely. As a family business and supermarket chain, we are at the heart of society.”

Mystery Grandparents Pay Off 82 Balances At Toy Store To Help Struggling Families
https://www.sunnyskyz.com/good-news/...gling-FamiliesScott Mills, the owner of Toyworld in Bendigo, said the two grandparents walked into the store on Wednesday, wanting to give back.
"They told us a story about how they were in hardship when they were younger and struggled to pay their bills ahead of Christmas," Mills said. "They always swore that if they ever found themselves in a position where they could help, they would."
They then paid off the bills of 82 families.

My husband recently got hired on where I work. He's an immigrant from England. When we fell in love in the summer of 2019, we started talking about the possibility of him visiting the states. In November of the year he promised that the following March 2020 he would visit me. He did. That May I asked him to marry me (I know, that's different), and he said yes. In the past two weeks he's been learning to drive.

Guy Turns Old Tires Into Beautiful Cozy Beds For 6,000 Stray Dogs And Cats in Brazil
https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/amar...es-repurposed/Although common sense dictates it’s best to let sleeping dogs lie, nowhere is it written that they can’t do so with a touch of panache. And if the beds they lie in are a boost to the environment and give comfort to homeless pets? So much the better.
That’s just what Brazilian artist, environmentalist, and animal lover Amarildo Silva Filho was inspired to do after coming across a pile of used tires in his neighborhood a few years ago.
Where some saw trash, Silva Filho saw an opportunity for upcycling treasure that wound up making a world of difference to stray cats and dogs. After collecting the tires and giving them a thorough cleaning, Silva Filho put his artistic vision to work fashioning personalized pet beds.
Once the custom paint jobs were complete, with the addition of hand-sewn mattresses, the colorful comfy cots were ready to be distributed to local shelters. To meet the growing demand, he launched Caminhas Pets—and has since gone on to hand-craft more than 6,000 pet beds.
To prepare each tire, he cleans them, cuts off the tops with a jigsaw, covers the hole at the bottom with plywood, and then sews his own cushions to make them cozy. He paints and stencils each one with bright colors.

Teens Show Holiday Spirit Grabbing Rakes to Help Elderly with Leaf removal
https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/21-t...s-for-elderly/
A school bus load of 21 New Jersey teens in 7th and 8th grade traveled to volunteer for community service, serving seniors and inspiring neighbors with their good deeds.
Equipped with rakes and recycled paper bags, they cleaned up property around elderly homes in Wayne providing leaf removal free of charge.
Approved by the Ramsey NJ Board of Education, the kids volunteers for the nonprofit organization I Want To Mow Your Lawn Inc., which was started over the pandemic last summer.
Brian Schwartz founded I Want To Mow Your Lawn after getting laid off from his advertising job.
“We’re now in 35 states with over 150 volunteers,” he told GNN this week.

13-Year-old Boy Granted a “Make-A-Wish” and Uses It to Feed the Homeless Every Month for a Year
https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/abra...food-homeless/
On their way home from one of his many doctor’s appointments, the Mississippi teen shared his decision with his mom, Miriam. The wish Abraham asked for was to feed the homeless in his area one day a month for an entire year.
While she couldn’t have been more proud of Abraham, Miriam did wonder if perhaps he wouldn’t rather have something for himself—like a PlayStation—but really, she wasn’t surprised by her son’s selflessness. Prior to his diagnosis, Abraham and his family regularly volunteered in their community handing out hot meals to the homeless.
