Jose Lopez has been DFA'd so Zach Duke could be placed on the 40-man. If he gets claimed, do the REDS try another player to try not to lose Lopez?

    No. Not an option.

The Reds have 10 days. With Spring Training starting, can somebody be put on the 60 Day IL and reinstate Lopez? Not that I'd bother, but I wonder if it's an option. I have to think Blandino is 60 Day bound to start the season. It might delay the decision until they need to Roster spot for somebody else.

I do not believe it is an option. I think that's only an option in August.

    ??????????August???????

The 60 Day DL is an option all year. I just don't know how soon they can use it. I don't think a DFA requires waivers until the 10 day period is up. Could be wrong. It's academic anyway, Jose Lopez isn't worth the gyrations, I just wonder about it. Once Spring Training officially begins for position players, I think Blandino can be put on the 60 day. That's less than 10 days from now.

If we've learned anything, it should be to not sweat which players get dropped from the 40-man.

The part that wasn't an option is the "reinstate Lopez" part. You have 10 days to waive or trade. Reinstate is not an option. In August you can pull back a guy who is waived.

If no team puts in a waiver claim, they can outright Lopez to the minors.

But, my understanding is they don't have to put him on waivers right away. They can reinstate him before that. They have seven days to put him on waivers. He's in limbo for 10 days until the Reds decide to waive, trade, release, outright.

A player can be Designated for Assignment and then subsequently returned to the club's MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) and optioned to the minors as long as the player is not replaced on the club's MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) by another player after the player is Designated for Assignment.

    He's already been replaced.

He's already on waivers. The club has up to seven days (formerly ten days) to either trade, release, or outright the player to the minors if he clears waivers.

    Giants claimed Lopez.

Utility man Sherman Johnson (cup of coffee in the bigs last year), tall righty Kyle Halbohn and AAA catcher Parker Morin are all on the minor league ST roster. Also Sebastian Elizalde is back from the Mexican leagues.

No Agreement Between Reds, Robbie Ross

Feb. 19: A source tells MLBTR that there is no current agreement between the Reds and Ross. While the two sides have talked, Ross is continuing to throw for other clubs as he seeks a landing spot for the 2019 campaign.

Reds signed infielder Yonathan Mendoza to a minor league contract.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”
