Early snubs for me are Ethan Hawke for Best Actor (First Reformed should be way more in the conversation) and Won't You Be My Neighbor for Best Documentary Feature (indefensible).

I'm hoping to catch up on several of these movies in the next couple weeks.

Totally agree about Best Documentary. That was one of the few movies we actually went to see in 2018. It was done extremely well. Saying that I didn't see the ones nominated but its hard for me to believe that all of those were better.

10 nominations for The Favourite? Ha. Interesting film for sure, but the Academy shouldn't reward movies for trying quite that hard to be "artsy".

Saw Vice last night. I do not get the hype. Give all the actors nominations—they were great (except for Steve Carrell channeling the ghost of Michael Scott)—but I thought the movie itself was a real drag.

Seriously though, Christian Bale was outstanding.

    What they got right:

Roma (absolutely stunning aesthetics; opens a conversation we need to have)
The Favourite (glad to see one of my favorite new directors recognized)
Black Panther (likely the most important film event of the year; amazing mise-en-scene and performances)

    Biggest snubs for me:

Sorry to Bother You (my favorite film of the past year; not surprised it got overlooked though because it is so radical)
If Beale Street Could Talk (got a few noms, but should have had more -- beautiful film)

    Most overrated:

Green Book (don't understand why this film is such a critical darling; utterly conventional in every way)
A Star is Born (absolutely don't get the hype on this one; I don't mind Cooper/ Gaga but give me Kristofferson/Streisand any day)
Bohemian Rhapsody (interesting story, great performer but... film is just overwrought IMO)

I still need to see several titles: Vice, Cold War, Crazy Rich Asians...

The Academy (and movie industry as a whole) is so confused right now. A black and white foreign language film (Roma) and a $300 million dollar super hero movie (Black Panther) competing against each other for best picture.

And Roma - I watched it because of all the positive reviews. It was borrrrrrring. But it was filmed in b&w and about an impoverished people, so it's automatically understood to be a fabulous picture.

It's one of those movies people are afraid to admit they didn't like. English Patient is another classic example.

I've got no problem with a wide swath of movies, as long as the voters are actually watching them. There are 7,700+ voting members of the academy. I'm not sure they're confused as much as they are in disagreement. They're also trying to be more diverse: https://www.goldderby.com/article/20...s-voters-news/

I am a huge Queen fan, and thought Rami Malek was great, but don't understand why it's getting best picture nominations in all the major award shows. It'a lot of fun, but it's pretty much paint-by-number and one chliche after another.

I've only seen four on the list - will see Roma this weekend. My favorite so far was Blackkklansman.

I didn't like the English Patient. My sister in law hasn't liked me ever since I said so out loud. Keeping an open mind about Roma. Will see it this weekend.

Re: Academy Award nominations are out

I really liked Roma. I'm kind of a sucker for slice-of-life movies that don't necessarily have a thrilling plot, but give insight into people and places that aren't normally seen on the big screen. It was just kind of a beautiful memoir. It's my pick so far.

Saw BlackKKlansman last night, and thought it was great. Probably not in my top 3 Spike Lee movies, but that's not a knock. The ending was a serious gut punch, and I imagine it's being hotly debated in internet places that I avoid. I somehow hadn't heard about it ahead of time—I just know my wife and I were both in tears and questioning why he made that choice. No one will ever accuse Spike of a lack of boldness.

My rankings go something like this:
    1. Green Book
    2. Bohemian Rhapsody
    3. BlackKKlansman
    4. A Star is Born
    5. Roma
    6. The Favourite
    7. Black Panther
    8. Vice

If Beale Street Could Talk definitely should be on this list. It'd probably be 1 or 2 for me.

Green Book was fairly boring and I don't think it was all that revolutionary either.

I've only seen 4 of the 8, so I can't speak for all of them but A Star is Born was the best of those 4.

I disliked the English Patient before Elaine did.
