I think you'd need a lead up to it There are so many really good players from bygone eras that many folks don't know about. They tend to get short shrift in voting like this. Remember in the late 60's, Edd Roush was voted the greatest all-time Reds player. Of course, he wouldn't be today, but he ought to be in the conversation. The pitchers of the 1940's staffs were very good too, etc.

Certainly a lot of greats would be considered from all the eras. Guys like Roush & Lombardi.

I'm 66 and this will be my 61st season following and being a die hard Reds fan and though there has been many good Reds players that have come and gone in my time I still believe that Frank Robby was the best all round player of my time. There was nothing on the field that the guy could not excel at.I always hoped that after Sparky was fired that he would be given a chance to manage the Reds one day

When I was a kid I would sit in the sun/moon deck in Crosley Field. And of course I always took my glove. Once at the beginning of an inning Robby was walking out to his position in right field and I yelled through the chain link fence "hey Robbie, will you sign my glove?" He shook his head no (of course he couldn't during a game), but I was just thrilled that he acknowledged me.

Re: Frank Robinson is in failing health

I'm a young pup (at least in this thread) who will turn 56 a few days after Opening Day. So rather than remembering Robinson as a Red, I only know him as a player who helped the Orioles beat Cincinnati in the 70 series. Someone I might see a couple of times a year on the Game of the Week. Then later as a manager.

I’m 65 and my earliest memories go back to 1961.
I was 6 yrs old, next to the youngest of 10 children, 2 girls 8 boys.

With that many kids my Father, God rest his soul was always working.
My love of baseball and the Cincinnati Reds initially came from my older brothers and their friends.
They played “Hardball” going all out on every pitch and every play, showing no mercy on this kid brother.

They all loved everything about Frank Robinson and passed that love on to me.
After all the little league games for all the different age kids were over we would all get together and play more baseball till we had to go home for supper.

After supper we would play slam ball in the schoolyard.

In those days we nobody had air conditioning so folks would sit out on the front porch or yard and talk to their neighbors, all the while there was a radio on every porch or in a window tuned into the Reds game.

We could walk all over the neighborhood and never miss a pitch.

Those were the Good Ol’ Days when Frank Robinson and every kid in Cincinnati payed the game like Charly Hustle long before the Yankees hung that monicker on Pete Rose..

Robby and Vada has a bad Series vs the Yanks in 61.
But they both had a great season to get Cincinnati to the Series

I remember Sport Magazine. When I was a kid I have a full page color portrait of Pete Rose, taken from a "Sport Special" article on Pete, taped up on my wall.

I am saddened to learn of the illness of Frank Robinson. I became a Reds fan in 1966, just after "the trade," so I do not really recall him as a Red. He was just a great great player and arguably one of the most underrated players ever. He was the Reds Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Al Kaline.
The Yankees never traded Mantle, the Pirates never traded Clemente, the Tigers never traded Kaline, and the Giants and Braves only traded Mays and Aaron near the end of their careers and more of less at their request, allowing them to finish their careers in the cities where they first played in MLB.
The Reds instead traded away Robinson when he supposedly was an "old 30" and actually was in his prime.
Robinson was not voted onto the official MLB "All Century Team" in 1999. There were later vocal complaints by Pirates fans of the omission of Clemente from the All Century Team, but Robinson's omission was worse. Robinson was a greater player than Clemente and Kaline, and just a hair behind Mays, Mantle and Aaron.
    I wish Robby well.

I am 68 and 1961 was also my first year as a Reds fan. I'm sure most younger fans don't know what it was like when all you had to do to get to the WS was to win more games than anyone else in either league. Thinking back on that season I remember Robbie, Vada, Wally, Gene, Eddie Kasco, Gus Bell (David's grand daddy). Blasingame. And of course Hutch. A lot of folks don't realize that Crosley Field was built the same year as Fenway Park. I wonder what it would be like now if they would have just upgraded it the way they did in Boston. Water under the bridge now, besides I love going to games at GABP. But I'll always remember going to my first game at Crosely. It's true what they all say that the smell is the first thing you notice.

    Thanks for the link.
Old Reds Fan mentioned the smell when he first entered Crosley Field. I remember by first visit to Crosley in 1966-to my young eyes Crosley Field was the most magnificent thing I had ever seen.
The link to the HOF summary of Robinson's career mentioned how competitive a player he was. I can recall a Sport Magazine article after the 1970 season where players were polled to select baseball's greatest competitor. Robinson finished third. Bob Gibson, only a few years removed from a game in which a Roberto Clemente line drive broke his leg yet Gibson finished the inning, was second. Pete Rose was first.

Re: Frank Robinson is in failing health

As Earl Weaver described years later, “Nobody had more guts at the plate than Frank. … He actually curled his upper body and head over the plate and dared pitchers to hit him. National League pitchers, particularly Don Drysdale, were only too glad to oblige. In 10 years with Cincinnati, Robinson was hit by a pitch 118 times.
On the other hand, his slides into bases were “deliberately vicious” and he often spiked infielders to break up the double play.8 One notorious incident occurred on August 15, 1960. Tagged out by Milwaukee’s Eddie Mathews, Robinson slid hard into third base, prompting a gruesome fistfight between the future Hall of Famers.

I was lucky enough to see Robby play at Crosley. Was as close to him as I am close to my computer monitor. I was a kid and didn't have the guts to ask for an autograph. Later, I saw him make a circus catch against the scoreboard. Whatever Bill DeWitt was on the day they traded him must be made illegal.
