Second verse of Lost Highway may be my all-time favorite. Doesn’t get any better than this...

“Just a deck of cards and a jug of wine
And a woman's lies makes a life like mine
On the day we met, I went astray
I started rolling down that lost highway”

    Oh now, come on---

Everybody knows the greatest line is this:

And I need you more than want you
And I want you for all time

    I mean, that is...just heaven.

Re: Best Country Song of All Time

Country is a little bit of a blindspot for me, partly because of the wealth of history to sort through and because I have weird, unpredictable aversions to certain sub-genres and country triggers a lot of them.

An example is that I love that first Towns Van Zandt record but do NOT like the rest of his catalogue. Same with Emmylou Harris and her Wrecking Ball album- I love that album and no thanks to most of the rest. Asking someone to curate a "best of the actual good old school stuff" playlist feels like it would be a waste of time because, for no known reason, I'll like a 3rd of it and really really not enjoy the rest.

And, of course, I like stray songs from Glenn Campbell, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, etc. but that feels like basic music education. My personal favorite country albums are Magnetic Fields - The Charm of the Highway Strip and any $3 Ricky Nelson LP sitting in any record store across America.

I've been to dinner at Jimmy Buffet's house, and I've eaten it at a homeless shelter. And there's great joy and harrowing terror to be found in both places.
