They used to be a power in Wrestling until the program was dropped.

    Women' Basketball
    Women's Gymnastics

They dropped Track a long time ago.

They were great in Football under Mike Riley.

They haven't been good in basketball since the great Ralph Miller.

I don't even know if they have a Men's Soccer program.

I don't know about golf, either.

Academically, they are probably doing more to save the planet than any school in the U.S.

Oregon State also built their program with NW recruits. It's still their heart and soul.

Xavier's got a 13-0 lead in Oxford in the 6th inning. I guess the Muskies came to play in this particular mid-week contest.

My Vols pitched their ninth shutout of the year yesterday. Back to SEC play this weekend. A tough road series with Arkansas

Finished off the Redhawks 13-4 but Miami is 30-10 on the season and hosting the Northern Illinois Huskies (12-28) for a three game set this weekend.

And, that's after a tidalwave of success from the baseball program. They weren't asking for much...just a 3rd Assistant Coach. Little League teams have that much.
I didn't realize it was a D1 vote by 40 A.D.'s to authorize a paid 3rd Asst Coach for all programs. Oregon State voted against it because it included a paid 3rd Assistant for Softball. He said had it been only for baseball, OSU would have voted for it. A panel of 4 from Oregon State determined how they would vote.

His reasoning was that the last minute addition of including Softball in the request was unfair. His unfair reasons is that Softball averages 20 players per team while baseball averages 35 players per team, so the ratio of Coaches to Students would be 13-1 for Men and 7-1 for Women, while the Scholarships are currently 12 for women and 11.3 for men. Currently an unpaid Assistant is allowed per team, so it would basically turn that unpaid volunteer to a paid position. Teams would still have the option if having another unpaid Assistant.

Xavier won two of three in Omaha this weekend to take a stranglehold of the Big East race and move themselves up to #40 in the RPI. Now, at 19-24, the Muskies have zero shot at an at-large, but they're a pretty good team and have a good shot at the Big East auto-bid, particularly with the Big East playing their tournament at Prasco Park. But Xavier had a three game set in Austin in which they last all three games to Texas 6-5. Two of the three games they had Texas down to their final at-bat with a Xavier lead. Somehow turn those three 6-5 losses into 6-5 wins, and Xavier might have been in the hunt, still. Ifs and buts, of course, but pretty solid season for Xavier so far.

Pac-12 has the top 3 spots, but the SEC has an absurd 7 of the next 11 teams in the latest D1 Baseball poll. Tough for the Vols to get swept by the #8 (now #5) team and fall out of the poll.

And in a sign of how different college baseball has become, in a sport that used to have powerhouses like Fullerton, Wichita State, Pepperdine and Rice from conferences that are generally not competitive in any other sport, all but East Carolina from the top 17 are from the so-called Power 5 conferences. UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine still sneak in there at the end from the Big West, but it's nothing like the "old days".

UNC beat UVA yesterday to remain tied with Georgia Tech for 1st in the ACC. UNC scares me, ton of errors lately and still questionable pitching.

Some of those good Coaches went to the larger conferences to get the big paychecks. Baseball in the larger conferences has taken a greater interest from A.D.'s thanks to better coverage of the sport on TV.

Just observationally, that started happening as more and more of the conferences (specifically the SEC, followed by the PAC and ACC) started putting more games on TV. Coaches started using that as a recruiting tool like they did for college basketball back in the 70s-80s. It left some of those programs a little behind.

Even after Oregon State lost Super Star Pitcher Kevin Abel, their staff threw 71 Strikeouts in five games last week.

After pounding Miami in Oxford last week, Xavier lost to the Redhawks on Victory Parkway today. Weird game, baseball!
