Just posted this on the other “Coaches” thread, but I’ll post here, too.

Lol! Brewer fans are going spastic over losing Johnson. This may be a huge positive thing for the Reds.

Once they hire a new bench coach and maybe a hitting coach I think they'll be done as far as coaches go.

I still don't see Hatcher, Jaramillo, Power, Benavides, or Stefanski going anywhere.

Apparently Brewers tried hard to keep him.

David Stearns confirms @Ken_Rosenthal report that highly regarded pitching coach Derek Johnson is leaving the Brewers. Said they had "extensive" negotiations to keep him.

Brewer fans aren't too happy about this. Seems like a great first hire for Bell's new staff.

Re: Reds Hire Derek Johnson as pitching coach

Johnson was an assistant at Southern Illinois 1995-1997, a pitching coach for Stetson from 1998-2001, and the pitching coach of the Vanderbilt Commodores baseball team from 2002 to 2012. Vanderbilt had 32 pitchers drafted during Johnson's tenure and six first-round draft picks (four in the top eight picks), including David Price, who was a No. 1 overall pick in June 2007. Johnson's other first-rounders are Jeremy Sowers (2004), Casey Weathers (2007), Mike Minor (2009), Sonny Gray (2011) and Grayson Garvin (2011). Johnson was a part of eight NCAA Regional teams and three Super Regional teams (2004, 2010, 2011) at Vanderbilt.

Before that he was an all-conference pitcher at Eastern Illinois (1994 grad), he did not play professionally.

The 46 year old, his wife, and 2 children reside in Nashville.

“Unfortunately after going out and aggressively hiring Johnson we just didn’t have the resources to go after costly pitchers in free agency.”

    Very unReds like move.

Who are these aggressive guys who wooed away the Brewers’ pitching coach?

I like the move. I wonder if Johnson came here because he was convinced that the Reds will significantly upgrade the pitching this year.

Regardless, I'm sure he will use that as his reason. Or maybe something else, like $$$

Wonder if this makes Wade Miley a likely target.

AND he has seen some struggling young Reds arms that he thinks can be rehabilitated.

    Nice start
