Games of Thursday, May 30

MiPOD Phillip Ervin must be doing everything in his power to get back to the bigs. Since being sent down, he has hit in every game and has hit two home runs in each of the last two games. Phillip will turn 27 this year, but still has a chance of playing a meaningful role for the Reds in the future. Yesterday, Ervin went 3-5 with a double with the aforementioned 2 home runs (5), 3 runs scored, and he had 4 RBI.


The Louisville Bats won 11-6.

Brian O’Grady went 3-5 with a double, 2 runs scored, and he had 2 RBI.
Aristides Aquino went 3-5 with a run and an RBI.

The Chattanooga Lookouts lost 5-0.

Alfredo Rodriguez went 1-4.
Taylor Trammell went 1-4.
Packy Naughton allowed 3 earned in 5 innings with a walk and 3 strikeouts. He is now 2 for 2 in decent starts at AA.
Nick Howard allowed a run in 2.0 innings with a strikeout. Great to see him control his stuff for two innings and pitch adequately.

The Daytona Tortugas lost 2-1.

Hendrik Clementina went 1-4 with a solo home run (5).

No, sorry. It takes an administrator to be able to update it on a continuing basis. Didn't happen this year. At some point, I may go back and do some tallying, but it's not imminent.

Keury Mella, Louisville: 7 innings, 4 hits, 1 walk, 7 strikeouts, 0 runs. Mella came over in the deal for Mike Leake, which feels like a long time ago, and came along with Adam Duvall, who's entire rise and fall we witnessed. Along the way Mella has climbed the system but never dominated like he showed glimpses of doing in lower levels of the Giants system. Hard to say what we left with the now 25-year-old Dominican righty, but he's capable of outings like this that keep you intrigued.

Honorable mention: Tony Santillan, Chattanooga: 6 innings, 6 hits, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts, 2 runs, 1 earned run. After a poor outing gave him an ERA over 4.00 in his first start in May, Santillan has pitched 29.1 innings in his last 5 starts with a 2.45 ERA with 8 walks to 27 strikeouts.

Nick Longhi, Bat: 2-4, 2 HR (9), 3 RBI, OF assist at home from LF. Of the West Springfield Longhis. Seems like if it's Sunday, Longhi is on the podium. Second time he's garlanded on this day following a two-homer game. Hitting .311, .465 vs. lefties. As noted before, he's still only 23, so pay attention.

Mike Siani, Dragon: HR (4). Occasional flashes of power are a nice development for a kid in a challenging assignment (struggling squad, tough league for someone who was in high school a year ago).

Lyon Richardson, Dragon: 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K. Still looking for that first pro win, pitched plenty well enough to get it. He hasn't been striking out many hitters, but he's had enough good starts to suggest there's something there by way of pitchability, competitiveness... something.

Jose Acosta, DSL Red: 3-5, 2B, 2 RBI, SB. Hit 2nd, played 3rd. Back for 2nd season, switch hitting infielder has shown speed and on-base skills, but struggled overall at the plate in 2018.

Thomas Lora, DSL Red: 2-5, 2 RBI. SS hit leadoff in first pro game.

Darlin Guzman, DSL Red: 2-4, BB. Hit 3rd, played both OF corners. Lefty swinger had a nice age 17 season in the DSL last year. Lots of EBHs, but also struck out lots.

Daniel Vellojin, DSL Red: 2-4, 2B, BB 2 RBI, CS. Catcher, switch hitter, 2nd season in DSL. Born in Colombia but was living in NYC when drafted.

Illvin Fernandez, DSL Red: 2-4. Yep, Illvin. 6'1" SS out of the DR makes his debut hitting 8th.

Honorable Mention: Mac Sceroler, Daytona . . . 5 IP, 2 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, 7 K. Only the second time the 24-year-old righty has gone 5 innings this year, and his season high in strikeouts. A fifth-rounder in 2017.

Games of Monday, June 3

It was a pretty good day on the farm in Edd Roush's eyes. The Reds took the top guy on my board with the first pick, and then took a high upside guy with their second pick. On top of that, the two guys I seem to be higher on than the rest of the board had good days (once again).

MiPOD Tejay Antone threw a one hitter over 8 shutout innings with 3 walks and 7 strikeouts. So I get that he is already 25 years old, but look at his last four years in the minors. He hasn't had an xFIP over 3.57 in any of them and that was last year when he was returning from injury. I will not be surprised if he makes some waves in Cincinnati next year and should be firmly in the mix for a spot in the rotation out of Spring Training if he keeps this up. Avoiding walks is huge, and the three walks tonight are the most since his first start of the season. This is Antone's fourth start of the season allowing three or less hits while throwing at least five innings.

The Louisville Bats lost 7-6 in 10 innings.

Games of Tuesday, June 4

Packy Naughton, Chattanooga: 6 innings, 3 hits, 0 walks, 6 strikeouts, 0 runs. Everyone's favorite Boston Brahmin was challenged with a promotion to Double A and so far he's succeeding. Naughton's got a 2.81 ERA in his 3 starts for the Lookouts and this was his best yet. The Reds might just have something with this young left-hander.

Honorable mention: Brian O'Grady, Louisville: 2-3, HR, BB, 3 RBI. That's 15 HRs now for the Rutgers product, just two behind the International League leader Adam Duvall. What else is there to say? Gotta let the BOG eat, and the BOG likes AAA pitching.

Honorable mention: Stuart Fairchild, Daytona: 3-4, HR, RBI. After 24 games played, Fairchild had a .554 OPS as of mid-May. The prediction by prospect ranking outlets that he'd likely be in AA by mid-year seemed on life support. But all Fairchild has done since May 15th is hit, in his last 15 games he is slashing .364/.446/.673 with 3 HRs, 6 doubles, a triple, 10 singles, and 8 walks to 11 strikeouts. Now armed with an OPS of .771, Chattanooga seems as though it can be very much within reach.


In other action, as the farm willed themselves to a win at every level and perhaps start to fear for their playing time with the ongoing draft


Christian Colon, Louisville: 1-3, 2 RBI

Sean Markey, Louisville: 6 innings, 4 hits, 3 walks, 1 strikeout, 2 runs. The line doesn't really matter, Markey is a filler arm who kept the Bats in the game as opposed to many of their starters this season who have been lit up



Alfredo Rodriguez, Chattanooga: 2-3, 2 walks. It's June and Alf is hitting over .300, he's still got no power but I think we are all pleasantly surprised by the former.

Jose Garcia, Daytona: 3-4, 2 doubles. Garcia had cooled off a bit after a hot start but the 21-year-old Cuban is still holding his own in the FSL.

Ryan Lillie, Daytona: 6 innings, 2 hits, 2 walk, 7 strikeouts, 0 runs. With Packy in Tennessee, Lillie takes over as the Tortugas best starter statistically. The recently-turned-23-year-old formerly of the Marlins system has a solid 3.07 ERA after 12 starts.

Julio Pinto, Daytona: 3 innings, 4 hits, 0 walks, 2 strikeouts, 1 run. Picked up an old fashioned save.



Mike Siani, Dayton: 2-4, BB, 2 RBI, stolen base. Perhaps a little extra motivation seeing his little brother drafted with reports on how much better said brother is than Mike.

Jay Schuyler, Dayton: 2-5

Bren Spillane, Dayton: 1-4, 2B, BB. Back in Dayton after about a month in an undisclosed location, the big man is still trying to make better contact.

Brian Rey, Dayton: 2-4, 2 doubles

Randy Ventura, Dayton: 1-2, 2 walks, 2 stolen bases. Probably the type of player most at risk of losing playing time to the new crop.

Ricky Salinas, Dayton: 6 innings, 5 hits, 0 walks, 4 strikeouts, 1 run, 0 earned runs. For those keeping score, all 4 starters in the stateside system went 6 innings and all below AAA had 0 earned runs. Pretty impressive day!

MiLPoD: Wennington Romero, Daytona . . . 4.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 5 K. A modest line for a MiLPod, but it was a day of modest performance. The crafty lefthander gets the nod because it was his first action of 2019, and because, after two subpar seasons, he’s trying to reprise the excellence of his rookie-ball years, and because he’s still only 21, and because he’s always been a favorite of mine.

Also notable on a day when the estimable DSL Reds suffered their first defeat of the season, mustering but one hit (while scoring three runs) . . .

Ryan Nutof: 1 IP, 0-0-0, 2 K, Sv (8). Former Wolverine rocking a 1.04 ERA since his lousy first 2 games of the season.

I missed his breakout. Like Ryan Nutof, he's been dominant since a couple wretched outings early. Over the past month, he's had 11 straight scoreless appearances over 3 levels. Prior to that, he'd given up just 2 runs in 8.1 innings. In exactly 9 innings between Daytona and now Chattanooga, he has 18 K.

But no, I know nothing about his stuff.
