Games of Monday, June 24

MiPOD Edwin Yon went 3-5 with a home run (1), and 2 RBI. The 2014 bonus baby ($170,000) is making his fifth trip through rookie ball even though he is yet to turn 21. I have not heard much about him here on Redszone, and he did not even make our top 40, but fangraphs thought enough about him to make him a top 30 prospect going into this year. They talk about his impressive physique which will take a while to develop, and he may not start showing a hit tool until he enters his mid-20s. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/top-33-p...ncinnati-reds/

It's hard to take too much from his first four years' statistics since he was so young and he only cracked 200 PAs in 2016. Either way, the profile is high strikeouts, with a decent amount of walks. Hopefully he can develop that hit tool and start hitting for pop. Let's hope tonight's bomb is the first of many this year.

Honorable Mention Ibandel Isabel went 3-4 with a solo home run (17) and 2 runs scored. The 24 year old has certainly shown a good amount of pop in his time in the Reds' organization, hitting 35 bombs with Daytona last year (and one in the Dodgers' org, but he needs to find a way to cut down on the Ks (42.4% this year).

Louisville Bats lost 3-1.

Scooter Gennett (rehab) went 2-4 with a double.
Josh VanMeter went 1-3 with a walk and a solo home run (14).
Scott Schebler went 1-4.
Vladimir Gutierrez had his best start of the year. He pitched 7 innings and allowed no earned runs (3 unearned runs, though), walking only 2, while punching out six.

Chattanooga Lookouts lost 7-5.

Alfredo Rodriguez went 1-5 with an RBI. He has hits in eight of his last nine games and his BA is up to .306.
Jose Siri went 1-4 with a walk.
Tyler Stephenson went 1-4 with a run.
Calten Daal went 3-4 with a double and 2 RBI.

Mitch Nay, Chattanooga: 3-4, 2 HRs, 4 RBI. The former Blue Jays first rounder form earlier in the decade seems determined to show that his solid numbers last year were no fluke, he's hitting even better this year. He had to contend with a lot of injuries in the past, perhaps he's a late bloomer or just a mirage but either way the 25-year-old has to feel glad the Reds took a chance on him.

Wyatt Strahan, Chattanooga: 2.1 innings, 2 hits, 0 walks, 3 strikeouts, 0 runs. After an abysmal start to the season (ERA over 10 by May), it was noted on here that Strahan was sent to Arizona to work on stuff with some specialists. It seems to have done the trick, since returning the USC right-hander has a 1.76 ERA with 17 strikeouts to just 4 walks in 15.1 innings.

MiLPoD: Tyler Stephenson, Chattanooga . . . 3-4, HR (4), 2 doubles, walk, 3 RBI. It was the tall catcher’s first homer since May 8. The former first-rounder (2015), who’s batting .324 in June, raised his slugging percentage from .359, where it didn't belong, to .397. FWIW, Stephenson spent all of 2017 in Dayton and all of last year in Daytona. Just sayin’.

Honorable Mention: Austin Orewiler, Daytona . . . 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K. At 26, Orewiler is a little old for his level. Okay, a lot old. The Rice product (14th round, 2015) has never been ranked in any prospect polls. As a rule, he doesn’t strike out a lot of guys. But this is the third straight year his ERA has started with a 3, and it’s playing out so far as the best of those.

Honorable Mention: Luis Lopez, AZL . . . 4-4, triple, HR (1), 3 RBI. The 19-year-old Puerto Rican shortstop, drafted last year, enjoyed his evening as a DH.

Honorable mention: Ricky Salinas, Dayton: 5.1 innings, 1 hit, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts, 0 runs. Salinas caps off a great month of June with a 1.05 ERA in 5 starts across 26.1 innings. The reason why this strong performance it isn't more impressive? Well it is A ball and Salinas is about two months older than Lillie. We'll see what the Rice grad can do as he moves up the ladder.

MiLPoD: Hendrik Clementina, Daytona . . . 3-5, 2 HR (8), 6 RBI. The 250-pound catcher from Curacao, who hit 18 homers last year in Dayton, raised his OPS 44 points. If he happened to get real hot for a while, it would not be inconsistent with his history.

Honorable Mention: Johendi Jiminian, Chattanooga . . . 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 9 K. Unfortunately, the Lookouts’ bullpen couldn’t protect the 4-0 lead. In his last 4 starts, the 6-3 Dominican, 26, has allowed 3 runs over 22.2 innings, lowering his ERA to 2.88. Also singled.

Also notable on a day when the farms went 2-4 while starting only one pitcher (Mac Sceroler, and it didn’t go well) that the Reds actually drafted . . .

MiPOD The Notorious B.O.G.Brian O’Grady went 3-5 with 2 home runs (19). I wouldn't expect him to hit like this in Cincinnati, but certainly he would be more interesting to watch and more useful to the team than Jose Peraza.

Honorable Mention Jose Siri went 2-4 with 2 home runs (7) and 4 RBI. He was probably one hit away from being MiPOD. We are all happy he is striking out less, and finally his power is showing up again.

The Louisville Bats lost 7-6.

Tejay Antone, Louisville: 6 innings, 7 hits, 3 walks, 6 strikeouts, 1 run. Not the single most dominant performance but given the way runs are given up at Louisville Slugger Field, bending but not breaking and allowing just one run in a 6 inning start is fairly impressive.

Ibandel Isabel, Chattanooga: 2-5, HR, 4 RBI. The HR, the big man's 20th of the season, was a grand slam that helped propel the Lookouts to victory.

Michael Beltre, Chattanooga: 1-4, HR, RBI. The toolsy Beltre turns 24 today and celebrated with his 1st HR of the season last night.

Alejo Lopez, Daytona: 1-2, HR, 2 walks, 2 RBI. It's been mostly a successful campaign this year for the 23-year-old infielder from Mexico City, the only problem is in the power department. This was just his 2nd longball of the year.
