Games of Thursday, July 4 (Independence Day)

MiPOD Lucas Sims threw 7 shutout innings with 2 walks and 11 strikeouts. He looked great for the first six innings in Cincinnati, but he has been all over the place since returning to Louisville. Hopefully he can build on this start and string a few together and get people wondering whether a Sims/DeSclafani tandem makes sense again.

Honorable Mention Alfredo Rodriguez went 2-4 with a solo home run (1) and a steal (12). As the president of the AlfRod fan club, I have to give him a shutout for his first bomb of the year. His ISO is still only .061, but his K rate is also just 13.2% and his IFFB% is still 5% lower than any other year. He likely won't hit .299 his entire career (like he is this season) but if his defense really is Gold Glove caliber, he is showing enough signs with the bat this year to make an impact in the bigs.

Honorable Mention Scott Moss allowed a run in 6 innings with a walk and 7 strikeouts. Moss took such a step back in the K department last year that his prospect status lost a lot of luster for me. However, the Ks are back and better than ever this year (although he is also walking more batters). More starts like this one may vault him to the top of the Reds pitching prospect lists.

Gavin LaValley, Chattanooga: 3-3, HR, 2 doubles, RBI. LaValley is now 24 and has never quite become the slugger (only his 5th HR on the season, same as TJ Friedl and Brantley Bell) that many figured he could develop into when he was drafted in the 4th round in 2014. But the Oklahoma native is finally starting to figure out AA pitching after a year and a half of floundering there, so he still might keep climbing the org ladder by doing just enough.

Mired in a trifling slump, the swinging Italian was moved up to the 2 hole and responded with 10 total bases, including long balls in the 7th and 8th. The 20-year-old corner infielder, in his second season, lifted his OPS over 1.000. If Leonardo keeps mashing like this, the Reds will have to go back to his homeland for Raphael and Donatello.

Honorable Mention: Raul Juarez, Greeneville . . . 2-2, double, HR (4), walk, sac fly, 2 runs, 3 RBI. That’ll work out of the 9 hole. The third baseman from Venezuela is in his second tour of Greeneville.

The big first baseman should be a fun one to keep track of, doesn't look great in a pair of jeans but all he did at Texas Tech was hit and he's brought his bat to Greeneville with him. The Dayton Dragons could use a man like him.

Honorable Mention: Brian O’Grady, Louisville . . . 2-4, double, HR (25). Third long one in 2 days for the Rutgers raker. Trails only Adam Duvall, by 2, for the league lead.

MiPOD Mitch Nay went 2-3 with a walk, double, and a run scored in game one and 1-1, walked, was hit by a pitch, and scored a run in game two. The 25 year old is getting a little long in the tooth, but the 2017 Rule V draft pick is really mashing in AA posting a .313/.375/.575 line in 261 PA in his second tour of AA.

Honorable Mention Michael Siani went 2-3 with 2 walks, a steal (26), and he scored 3 runs. The 20 year old has seen his BA climb up to .240 and his OBP is now .327. Hopefully the power is brewing under the surface. He is hitting .272 since 6/11.

The Louisville Bats lost 2-1.

Narciso Crook went 2-4 with a triple.
Tejay Antone allowed 2 runs in 6 innings with 4 walks and 2 strikeouts. Three straight starts with 2 ER or less for Tejay, although you hate to see the walks. 4.44 AAA ERA.
