Re: 2019 Minor-League Player of the Day

MiPOD Jose Siri it seemed likely that a Lookout would win the crown today since they had twice the chances to impress seeing how they played a double header. Siri went 1 for 2 with a double, walk and a steal in game one and then went 3-5 with an RBI. Siri's .295 BA will not hold due to a .422 BABIP, but his K rate is slightly down from last year, due to only 1 K in his last 3 games. Siri still has all the talent in the world and if his batting eye improves, watch out.

The Louisville Bats had the day off.

The Chattanooga Lookouts lost 1-0, won 5-4 in a double header.
    Game 1: 1-0 loss.

    Alfredo Rodriguez went 1-3.
Taylor Trammell went 1-3 with a double.

    Game 2: 5-4 win.

TJ Friedl went 1-3 with a walk, was hit by a pitch and scored a run.
    Alfredo Rodriguez went 1-3.
Taylor Trammell went 1-5 with a run.
Ibandel Isabel went 1-5 with a grand slam.
Brantley Bell went 2-4 with a double.
Gavin LaValley went 1-3 with a walk and a double.
Alex Powers threw 2.0 perfect innings with 3 strikeouts.

    The Daytona Tortugas lost 6-2.

Jonathan India went 1-3 with a walk.
    Drew Mount went 1-4.
Hendrik Clementina went 2-4 with an RBI.
Michael Byrne threw a shutout inning with 2 strikeouts.

    The Dayton Dragons lost 3-2.
Reniel Ozuna went 1-3 with a walk, triple, RBI, and he scored a run.
Jared Solomon allowed 2 earned runs in 5 innings with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts.
Andy Cox threw 1 and a third perfect innings.

Re: 2019 Minor-League Player of the Day

    Games of Tuesday, May 14

Rob Wooten, Chattanooga: 5 innings, 5 hits, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts, 1 run, 0 earned runs. No overly notable performances for the night so we'll just give the nod to a vet. Whom amongst us is not rootin for Wooten?

Honorable mention: Jonathan India, Daytona: 2-5, HR, 2B, RBI. HR was his 6th of the season and his OPS has cracked the .800 barrier as the numbers finally start to match the tools in the tough FSL environment.

In other action, with Louisville rained out:

    TJ Friedl, Chattanooga: 0-2, BB

    Tyler Stephenson, Chattanooga: 1-2, BB

    Brantley Bell, Chattanooga: 2-3, 2B

Juan Martinez, Chattanooga: 2 innings, 2 hits, 0 walks, 0 runs

Jose Garcia, Daytona: 3-5, 2B. Early returns at the plate pretty encouraging for the 21-year-old Cuban infielder this year after he got off to such a slow start last season.

    Hendrik Clementina, Daytona: 2-5, RBI

Drew Mount, Daytona: 1-3, 2 walks, stolen base

Ryan Lillie, Daytona: 6 innings, 5 hits, 1 walk, 6 strikeouts, 3 runs

Aneurys Zabala, Daytona: 2 innings, 2 hits, 2 strikeouts, 0 runs. Part of the return in last year's Dylan Floro trade, Zabala has cut down on his BB/9 so far this season and its paying dividends.

Mike Siani, Dayton: 1-4, BB. Back in the lineup and leadoff spot after missing about a week

Pabel Manzanero, Dayton: 2-4, HR, 2B

    Jay Schuyler, Dayton: 3-5

Shard Munroe, Dayton: 1-3, 2B, BB

Ricky Salinas, Dayton: 4.1 innings, 2 hits, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts, 2 runs, 0 earned runs

Eddy Demurias, Dayton: 2 innings, 0 hits, 2 walks, 2 strikeouts, 0 runs
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Re: 2019 Minor-League Player of the Day

    Games of Wednesday, May 15

MiLPoD: Mitch Nay, Chattanooga . . . 3-3, double, homer (3), sac fly, 4 RBI. After a solid introduction to the system in 2018, the corner infielder and former comp pick (Toronto, 2012) has played sporadically this year. But this outburst drives his OPS up to .867, which should get him a few more reps and a higher spot in the Lookouts’ lineup.

Honorable Mention: Bruce Yari, Daytona . . . 3-5, HR (1), 4 RBI. Canadian first baseman (heard that before?) has a .351 career OBP.

Honorable Mention: Keury Mella, Louisville . . . 5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K, W. The righthander’s middle name is not Consistency. But then, whose is? Occasionally, though, he shows why he was once the Giants’ top-rated prospect.

Also notable on a day that ended with Chattanooga and Daytona (tied) leading their leagues in runs (and Dayton last in the Midwest in ERA, by a long shot) . . .

    Daytona

Jonathan India: 2-3, triple, 2 walks, 2 runs, RBI. Last year’s first-rounder is on the move! India’s .855 OPS stands fifth in the pitching-friendly FSL.

Stuart Fairchild: 2-3, double, walk, 3 runs, 2 RBI. Showing signs.

Jose Garcia: Single, 2 walks in leadoff spot.

Packy Naughton: 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K, W (4-2). PackMan nearly had this thing locked up at 6 innings, with 2 hits, no runs, no walks. But he gets credit for finishing 7 on 89 pitches. ERA at 2.38. Right now, he’s the ace of the farm system.

    Michael Byrne: 1 scoreless inning, 2 K.

    Chattanooga

Chris Okey: 2-4, double, RBI. The demotion has apparently helped, to the tune of a .767 OPS.

    Gavin LaValley: 3-4, 2 runs.

Alex Powers: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K. If he were 23 instead of 27 (and perhaps not out of Southern New Hampshire), we’d be all over him. That’s 29 strikeouts in 20 innings with an 0.80 WHIP. I’m calling legit.

    Dayton

Mike Siani: 3-5, HR (2), 2 R, SB (9). Looking fine after a hard collision with the wall.

Jay Schuyler: 2-4, 2 SB (4). That’s a fair number of bags for a catcher.

    Connor Bennett: 1.2 IP, 0-0-0, 4 K. Georgian, 22, has 32 K in 18.1 IP.

    Adrian Rodriguez: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K.

    Louisville (game 1)

    Scott Schebler: 2-2, walk.

    Rob Refsnyder: 1-2, sac fly.

Anthony Bass: 1 scoreless inning, 2 K, save (9). Leads the International League in saves. Not bad on a team 5 games under .500.

    Louisville (game 2)

    Scott Schebler: 1-2, double, walk.

Matt Bowman: 1 perfect inning, fanned the side.

Re: 2019 Minor-League Player of the Day

    Games of Thursday, May 16

MiPOD Nick Longhi on a night in which all of the minor league teams lost, Longhi hit the only home run. Longhi is sporting a cool .866 OPS in AAA, but that will come down as his .392 BABIP comes down. Either way, it's nice to have another bat one call away from Cincinnati.

Honorable Mention Alfredo Rodriguez went two for four with a steal. He was one of only four minor Leaguers with a multi hit game yesterday and the only of those subselection to have a steal. He's hitting .307 with 5 steals after 123 PA.

Re: 2019 Minor-League Player of the Day

    Games of Friday, May 17

Andy Sugilio, Daytona: 2-4, HR, RBI, stolen base. Not a night of big performances so the 22-year-old Dominican wins for a well rounded game. He's batting .280 and has a passable .320 OBP, but needs more power like last night (.339 SLG % so far)

Honorable mention: Brantley Bell, Chattanooga: 2-2, 2B, 2 walks. Continues to outperform expectations (of which I think there were none) for this year.

Honorable mention: Bruce Yari, Daytona: 1-3, HR, BB, 3 RBI. Might have gotten the nod for POTD but he's the same age as Bell and a level lower and he also committed an error in this one, so his younger teammate gets the honor.

In other action, with only win by the Tortugas preventing a clean sweep of the farm:

Scott Schebler, Louisville: 1-2, 2B, BB. Still trying to find himself. Also fascinating that the Bats had just 3 hits and 5 walks and scored 6 runs, but still came out on the losing end.

Blake Trahan, Louisville: 1-3, 2 RBI

Jose Lopez, Louisville: 5 innings, 8 hits, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts, 3 runs. Still trying to get going, but at least didn't surrender any HRs in this one.

Jimmy Herget, Louisville: 1.2 innings, 0 hits, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts, 0 runs. Has a ways to go to bring down a blown up season ERA.

TJ Friedl, Chattanooga: 1-3, 2B, BB

    Calten Daal, Chattanooga: 1-3, RBI

    Jose Garcia, Daytona: 1-5, 2B

Drew Mount, Daytona: 2-5, stolen base

Hendrik Clementina, Daytona: 2-4, 2 RBI

Mac Sceroler, Daytona: 5 innings, 6 hits, 0 walks, 5 strikeouts, 2 runs

Ryan Nutof, Daytona: 1.1 innings, 1 hit, 0 walks, 2 strikeouts, 0 runs

    Mariel Bautista, Dayton: 1-4, RBI

Pabel Manzanero, Dayton: 3-4, 2 RBI

Lyon Richardson, Dayton: 4 innings, 5 hits, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts, 2 runs. So far the young Lyon is neither thriving nor drowning in A ball, just treading water a bit.

Matt Pidich, Dayton: 2 innings, 0 hits, 2 walks, 3 strikeouts, 0 runs

Re: 2019 Minor-League Player of the Day

    Games of Sunday, May 19

MiLPoD: Brian O’Grady, Louisville . . . 3 for 5. All solo shots (7, 8, 9). We should have known. The Big O (1.065 OPS) had been hitless in his last 3 games, striking out 6 times in 10 ABs. Somebody had to pay.

Honorable Mention: Aristides Aquino, Louisville . . . 4-4, HR (5), walk, SB (2). The powerful Dominican has come off the IL smoking. Add him to VanMeter, O’Grady and Longhi, apply optimism, and the middle of the Bats lineup looks loaded.

Also notable on a day—the latest of many, actually—in which O’Grady might have been useful elsewhere . . .

    Daytona

Jose Garcia: HR (2), walk. Homer led off the game.

Alejo Lopez: 2-2. Left early for a pinch runner.

Andy Sugilio: 3-5, RBI. Speedy OF singled in winning run in 10th. Up to .289.

    Ryan Lillie: 7.2 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. A thrifty 85 pitches in nearly 8 innings.

    Ryan Nutof: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 5 K. Former Wolverine has been lights-out for about a month.

    Louisville

Christian Colon: 3-5, HR (2). Veteran infielder batting .297.

    Lucas Sims, Louisville: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 5 K, W (3-0). It’s like he purposely dialed it down a notch.

    Ian Krol: 1.1 IP, 0-0-0, 4 K. Let me think. . . . Krol, Duke. Duke, Krol . . .

Jimmy Herget: Faced 2, fanned 2.

    Chattanooga

    Gavin LaValley: HR (3).

Brantley Bell: 2 doubles, 2 RBI. Surprising .891 OPS for Jay’s kid.

Taylor Trammell: 2 walks, sac fly, run.

Cory Thompson: 1 IP, 2 H, zeros. Second appearance in Double-A went better than the first.

    Dayton

Mike Siani: Triple, run. Defense in CF getting rave reviews.

    Juan Martinez: HR (2).

Re: 2019 Minor-League Player of the Day

With apologies for the daylong delay, , here are the relevant facts from...

    Games of Saturday May 18

    MiLPoD:
Nick Longhi, Bat: 2-4, 2 HR (6), 3 RBI. He of the West Springfield Longhis returns to the MiLPoD podium for the 2nd straight weekend. Still only 23, Longhi may be having a semi-breakout, but it's still early and those AAA balls are richocheting around like bullets in Dodge City.

    Honorable Mention:
Mark Kolozsvary, Tortuga: 0-2, BB, 3 HBP. When was the last time a guy was hit thrice in a game? I ask you. Maybe this will help him feel better. At least he he didn't have to catch. Being on base 4 times as a DH out of the 2-hole merits a pat on the back anyway.

Also notable on a day Hendrik Clementina broke into double figures in runners left on base, never before seen in boxscores I can remember...

Aristides Aquino, Bat: 2-4. A gust of wind before the Sunday storm.

Alex Powers, Lookout: IP, zeros, K. ERA now at 1.29 as he gazes north toward Louisville.

    Jose Garcia, Tortuga: 2-5, RBI

Yonathan Mendoza, Tortuga: 3-6, 2 RBI. Filling in for India, who's been out with HBP syndrome.

Drew Mount, Tortuga: 2-4, 3B (2). Flashing Heiseyesque late round potential?

Dauri Moreta, Tortuga: 2 IP, H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K. Very small sample, but Moreta, ever erratic, hasn't walked anyone in ny of his 4 outings and for the first time since 2016 is getting batters to put the ball on the ground with regularity, Supposedly has a good arm, so we'll see.

Andy Cox, Tortuga: IP, 2 K, save (1). 7th rounder out of Tennessee in 2016 (Senzel's teammate), Cox has had 2 breezy outings ay high A after enduring torrents of baserunners in Dayton. Sometimes a change is all that's needed.

Brian Rey, Dragon: 2-4, HR (1). Pretty good first few days in full-season ball for the little, versatile 2018 draftee.

Shard Munroe, Dragon: 1-4, 3 RBI, HR (3)

Mariel Bautista, Dragon: 2-5, SB (9)

    Jared Solomon, Dragon: 4.1 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 K

Carlos Machorro, Dragon: 1.2 IP, H, BB, 5 K. The guy's ERA is over 10, but that doesn't mean he can't dominate the South Bend Cubs on any given night.

    Adrian Rodriguez, Dragon: 2 IP, BB, 2 K, win(1). Machorro's fellow Mexican.

Re: 2019 Minor-League Player of the Day

    Games of Monday, May 20

MiPOD Stuart Fairchild went 3 for 3 in the first game of the double header with his second bomb of the season and followed it up with one for one with a double and two walks in the second game of the double header. He was going to be hard to catch after the first game, but then put it out of reach by going perfect two games in a row. In the process, he raised his batting line to .257/.331/.410 from .228/.295/.337 going into the day. Not bad for the Reds 2017 2nd rounder. Fairchild entered the season as Redszone's 14th best prospect, despite scuffling down the stretch in the difficult Florida State League last year. Those struggles continued until Monday night when (hopefully) something clicked. Fairchild has the defensive chops and speed for centerfield, so the bar will always be lower offensively to make an impact in the bigs. Hopefully, he can make some noise this year and move up the prospect lists.

Honorable mention Tony Santillan went 5 and a third shutout innings with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts. He also went 1-2 with an RBI at the plate. The walks aren't pretty, but he has done a good job of keeping the ball in the yard and striking out guys this year. In winning his first start of the year, his updated line is certainly interesting for a barely 22 year old in AA 3.50 ERA, 3.32 FIP and 3.63 xFIP.

Honorable mention Jose Garcia went 1-3 with a double and an RBI in game one of the double header and 3-4 with a double, 2 runs scored, a home run (3) and 2 RBI in game game two. On most other days, that will win the MiPOD, but not when your teammate has a perfect day at the dish. Jose Garcia started out as Redszone's #11 prospect this year, but his .286/.349/.480 line in the FSL with good defense makes him a lock to be in the top 10 now and potentially in the top 5.

The Louisville Bats had the day off.

    The Chattanooga Lookouts won 4-0.

    Jose Siri went 1-4.
Ibandel Isabel went 1-4 with a home run (9) and 2 RBI.
Tyler Stephenson went 1-4 with a triple and a run.
Brantley Bell went 2-4 with a run and an RBI.
Gavin LaValley went 1-2 with 2 walks.
Alex Powers threw a perfect inning with 3 strikeouts.

The Daytona Tortugas won 4-3, lost 4-3 in a double header.

    Game 1: 4-3 win.

Jonathan India went 1-3 with a run scored.
Hendrik Clementina went 1-3 with a home run (4) and 2 RBI.
Packy Naughton allowed 3 earned in 6.0 innings with 5 strikeouts.

    Game 2: 4-3 loss.

Drew Mount went 1-4 with a double.
Jonathan India went 1-3 and was hit by a pitch.
Lorenzo Cedrola went 2-3 with a double and a run scored.
Wendolyn Bautista allowed a run in 4.0 innings with 6 strikeouts.

The Dayton Dragons lost 3 -2.

Pabel Manzanero went 3-4 with an RBI.
Jhon De Jesus allowed 2 runs in 5.1 innings with a walk and 2 strikeouts.
Matt Pidich threw 2.0 shutout innings with a strikeout.

Talk about your tale of two Fairchilds, in 15 April games he hit .130 with an OPS of .370. In 14 May games he has hit .392 with an OPS of 1.124.

Re: 2019 Minor-League Player of the Day

    Games of Tuesday, May 21

Morgan Lofstrom, Dayton: 3-6, HR, 4 RBI. Lofstrom was drafted in 2013 and, now 23, has been kicking around ever since. The odds are stacked highly against him ever "making it" but on this day he put up the best line of any Reds prospect so we salute the British Columbia native.

Honorable mention: Juan Martinez, Dayton: 4-7, RBI. One of the few bright spots on a lowly Dragons team, the 20-year-old Venezuelan third baseman continues to hit.

Honorable mention: James Marinan, Dayton: 7 innings, 4 hits, 3 walks, 2 strikeouts, 3 runs, 1 earned run. Bit of a weird line but it does go down in the books as a complete game, first of young Mr. Marinan's career.

In other action, with the Lookouts taking a breather:

Rob Refsnyder, Louisville: 2-5, 2B. Refsnyder's ability to hit Triple A pitching has never been in much doubt, and he's been a solid addition to the Bats with a .295 .374 .482 line in 34 games for them. Will the 28-year-old Korean-born utility man ever translate that ability to the big leagues where he has struggled?

Scott Schebler, Louisville: 2-4, BB. You know his story.

    Juan Graterol, Louisville: 2-4

    Narciso Crook, Louisville: 1-1, 3B

Jesus Reyes (2 innings), Matt Bowman, and Cody Reed combined to throw 5 scoreless innings after starter Keury Mella gave up 4 runs in 5 innings and took the loss for it.

Mark Kolozsvary, Daytona: 1-2, HR, BB

    Lorenzo Cedrola, Daytona: 1-3

Austin Orweiler, Daytona: 5 innings, 4 hits, 0 walks, 1 strikeout, 2 runs, 1 earned run

Adrian Rodriguez, Daytona: 2 innings, 1 hit, 0 walks, 1 strikeout, 0 runs

Julio Pinto, Daytona: 2 innings, 1 hit, 0 walks, 3 strikeouts, 0 runs

    Brian Rey, Dayton: 3-8, 2B

    Miguel Hernandez, Dayton: 2-5

    Jay Schuyler, Dayton: 3-8

    Pabel Manzanero, Dayton: 1-3, 2B

Re: 2019 Minor-League Player of the Day

    Games of Wednesday, May 22

MiLPoD: Chris Okey, Chattanooga . . . 3 home runs! Seriously! Numbers 1, 2, 3 of the year. 7 RBIs! Go ahead, tell me you saw this coming from the gritty catcher with a career OPS of .585—and that’s after Wednesday. If so, you’re the MiLFoD (f for fan).

Honorable Mention: Brian O’Grady, Louisville . . . 2 more home runs. That’s after 3 on Sunday, with just one game in between. VanMeter must have left his bats behind. With 11 long ones, the pride of Rutgers is slugging an almost Ruthian .672. (The Babe’s career slugging--.690. Lordy.)

Also notable on the day when Chris Okey . . .

    Louisville

    Rob Refsnyder: HR (4).

Narciso Crook: 2-3. Having a nice intro to Triple-A.

    Sherman Johnson: 2-4, double.

    Vlad Gutierrez: 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 K. Battled to a quality start after 3 early runs.

    Sal Romano: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.

    Chattanooga

Ibandel Isabel: HR (10). Feeling a little puny, big guy?

    Mitch Nay: 2-4, double.

Gavin LaValley: 2-4, 3 runs. Batted in front of Okey.

    Aaron Fossas: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K.

    Joel Kuhnel: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0-0-0, Sv (5).

    Daytona

Andy Sugilio: 3-4, walk, 2 runs, 2 SB (7). Speed merchant having a fair and improving season in spite of batting near the bottom of the order.

    Drew Mount: HR (1).

    Randy Ventura: 1-3, 2 walks, SB (3).

Jose Garcia: 1-4, walk, 2 RBI, SB (1). Game-tying HBP in bottom of 10th.

Stuart Fairchild: 1-4, 2 BB, 2 RBI, SB (2). Walkoff walk in 10th.

Bruce Yari: Triple, walk, 2 RBI.

    Mac Sceroler: 4 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K. Well . . okay.

    Andy Cox: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.

Ryan Nutof: 2 IP, zeros, W. Man is smokin’. ERA down from extra large to 3.00.

    Dayton

    Juan Martinez: 2-4, double, RBI.

Brian Rey: 1-2, walk, sac fly.

Jay Schuyler: 1-2, 2 walks, run.

    I Ain’t Lyon Richardson: 4.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K.

Eddy Demurias: 3.1 IP, 0-0-0, 4 K. The Gamecock has done some very good work lately.

    Connor Bennett: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K. Georgian has big K numbers.

Re: 2019 Minor-League Player of the Day

    Games of Thursday, May 23

MiPOD Tejay Antone wins the award again for the second time in two weeks. Tejay must enjoy pitching on Thursdays. He went six innings striking out 7 without walking a batter. He did give up a couple runs, but was the only winning pitcher in the Reds organization. As a reminder, Tejay was not in our top 40 going into this season, but he now has a 3.08 ERA, 3.32 FIP and 3.23 xFIP in 49 and 2/3 innings at AA.

Honorable Mention Brian O'Grady went 2-4 with a walk, and a 2-run home run (12). The 27 year old has a 1.104 OPS and 9 steals in 151 PA.

Honorable Mention Reiver Sanmartin threw 8 shutout innings on 2 hits and a walk while striking out 9 batters. The 23 year old has much better peripherals (3.15 FIP, 2.68 xFIP) than his 4.20 ERA or his 1-3 record would indicate.

    The Louisville Bats lost 8-7.

Scott Schebler went 1-4 with a run scored.
Rob Refsnyder went 2-5 with a double, run scored, and he had 2 RBI.
Aristides Aquino went 1-5 with a run scored.
Narciso Crook went 2-2 with an RBI.
Alex Powers threw a perfect inning with 2 strikeouts.
Cody Reed threw a perfect inning with a strikeout.

    The Chattanooga Lookouts won 7-3.

Alfredo Rodriguez went 2-5 with 2 steals and a run scored.
Taylor Trammell went 1-2 with 3 walks, 2 steals (10), and 2 runs scored.
Ibandel Isabel went 1-5 with a 2-run home run (11).
Tyler Stephenson went 1-3 with a walk, double, and he scored 2 runs.
Mitch Nay went 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI.
Calten Daal went 2-4 with 2 RBI.
Juan Martinez threw 2 shutout innings with 4 strikeouts.

    The Daytona Tortugas lost 3-0.

    Stuart Fairchild went 1-4.

    The Dayton Dragons lost 8-0.

    Michael Siani went 1-4.

Re: 2019 Minor-League Player of the Day

Regardless of getting the win, didn't Sanmartin objectively pitch better? More IP, more Ks, fewer runs, fewer hits.
    I'm not a system player. I am a system.
