Reds claim Jose Lopez; DFA Finnegan

    Cincinnati Reds
    @Reds

The #Reds have claimed off waivers from the Giants and optioned to Louisville RHP José López. LHP Brandon Finnegan has been designated for assignment.
Yes, our old Jose Lopez. And Finnegan’s fall from grace is complete
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

I think we can just about call that trade a bust now.

Honestly, who cares at this point if it was or wasn’t? They got really good assets at the time and they didn’t pan out.

They aren't good assets if they don't perform well at the MLB level. This what you get when you trade a very good MLB player for a bag(s) of beans. Nothing.

So what should have done with Cueto?

The trade winded up crapping out, but it was still the correct course of action.

Agreed. They have to perform to be classified as “good assets.”

However, the perception at the time was that these were good assets, at least Finnegan was.

You get good MLB player back for someone like that or don't trade and eat the losses. These minor league prospects rarely work out.

    The following players say hi.
    Jeff Bagwell
    DiDi Gregorius
    John Smoltz
    Jay Bell
    Curt Schilling
    Cliff Lee
    Eugenio Suarez
    Fernando Tatis Jr.

And literally hundreds more. The thought process was fine, and more than likely Finnegan won't get claimed. It sucks that it didn't work out, but I'd make the same trade/type of trade ten times out of ten.

They got a solid season of starting from Finnegan and Reed could still become something.

For two months of Cueto, that’s not a bust.

They did? I missed that. Maybe a few starts but not a season.

We will just agree to disagree on this one. IMO you don't trade someone who could have won a Cy Young award for three unproven minor leaguers. You have to get a good MLB player back with those minor leaguers. Also during that time I think the Reds could have got an extra draft pick if Cueto elected free agency. I would have rather took my chances with that.

    David Price:
July 30, 2015: Traded by the Detroit Tigers to the Toronto Blue Jays for Matthew Boyd, Jairo Labourt and Daniel Norris.
Boyd is a 4th starter at best, Norris is a walking injury bug, and Labourt is out of their organization.

I can't say that trade was a ringing success either.

Just a weird trade to use to rail against trading for prospects on. Not like the Reds were selling high, they literally sold at the last possible minute. I doubt any of the contenders in July 2015 were looking to trade their established mid rotation guy under team control for the next few years for 2 months of Cueto.

Cutting ties with Finnegan seems like a very good way to start a new season fresh. Solid juju move.

    Adding Lopez is sweet too.

Hopefully Brandon will stay in the Reds system. It may be that he needs a fresh start elsewhere to break out of this Sticky Finnegan he has been in the past year or two.
