    Alex Wood

Figured we might as well start a thread to track where our MIA ex-Dodger is in his road to recovery (fingers crossed)

After setbacks, Wood (back) now progressing

“If I get to Saturday and throw a ‘pen, and everything is good from there, then we can start talking about a serious timetable,” Wood said.
He added in video (on Reds Twitter) that "As long as I feel good and healthy, I don't think I'll need too many starts once I get out there and get going".
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Thanks for posting. Updates have been scarce. Since we are watching Senzel and Scooter as well, perhaps it would be a good idea to have a thread, if not a sticky, on news on Reds' IL players.

Hope he gets back on track. Seems like they are being super cautious with him not that it's a bad thing.

    Re: Alex Wood

Wood has been rehabbing at the Reds' complex in Goodyear, Ariz., but he joined the team Monday for their West Coast swing through Los Angeles and San Diego. He is scheduled to throw off a mound Saturday, which would be his first time doing so since a setback March 24.

Wood and the Reds have not targeted a return date, which was originally expected to be mid-April.
“If I get to Saturday and throw a ‘pen, and everything is good from there, then we can start talking about a serious timetable,” Wood said.

I really have high hopes for Wood. He's a sub 4 ERA LH starting pitcher which the Reds definitely need. None of their realistic SP prospects are LH if you no longer consider Reed and option. If the Reds can get 20 good starts from Wood an extension may be more affordable given his slow start. I'm not gonna go apepoo over back spasms.

Yeah I've been thinking too that the missed time, while unfortunate, could possibly help whatever chances there are for an extension.

IF things keep progressing well, Wood COULD be on a rehab assignment by the second week of May.

Reds are being very careful with establishing any type of specific timeline

    Re: Alex Wood

Well, we've got news, but it isn't good. Still gonna be a while.

As a result of lower back spasms from early in Spring Training, key Reds' offseason rotation acquisition Alex Wood hasn’t pitched since his lone Cactus League outing on Feb. 25. On Saturday, it was learned that the club will likely be without Wood a little longer than expected after he had another setback.

Wood had thrown two bullpen sessions since getting over a previous setback.

“I think he had his most encouraging day when he was in San Diego [last Saturday],” manager David Bell said. “But when he threw in the next session in Arizona, the next day it didn’t respond that well.

“It’s a little bit of a step back. He may go next week for an exam, like a second opinion, on his back.”
“We can’t wait to get Alex back,” Bell said. “We’ll just keep our fingers crossed that this is a minor setback, because he was definitely progressing. Our guys have stepped in and it’s been good. The one guy that we really thought would be a big part of it, he hasn’t yet. The depth has really helped us.”

Well they can always rehab him and send him on his way like Ryan Madson.

With Mahle pitching as expected, this is not good news.

I’ll kinda be surprised if he’s back before the all star game. Probably should’ve expected this.

    Re: Alex Wood

Would it be worth trying to buy out a year of Wood's free agency at a discount, with a market value option for 2021? It's his back, not his arm. He ought to recover from that.

I do think the chances of the Reds re-signing Wood become greater with the missed time and I am very interested in keeping him around.

    Rooting for him, for sure.

Sounds like it will be a while before the Reds get Wood.
