My non-medical opinion is that this is more than just back spasms. Something ain’t right.

    Re: Alex Wood

Wish he could’ve got a second opinion a few weeks ago.
Don’t know if it woulda cut down on his rehab time or not but it might have.

    Let’s say he needs surgery
He could have already had the operation and would be recouping now

I would stay away from him.....the Dodgers thought or at least claimed they thought his back issues were short term last year when he was removed from the rotation late in the season and the playoffs. His back is just as important as his arm is to pitch, and in general seems like back issues are far less likely to be corrected to the degree needed to throw 100 pitches than arm issues. If I recall last year, he had the ability to throw for like an inning.....and I would not surprised if he has to transition into a short reliever to finish out his career.

Yea I'm wondering the same thing. I'm obviously no doctor but I have dealt with back spasms and while they are incredibly painful you can generally get them under control pretty quickly, at least in my experience. Of course, the last time I stood on a pitcher's mound was 2004, so there is that.

It just wouldn't surprise me to learn The Reds are not wanting to clue people in on something worse. We know how tight lipped and weird they can be with injuries.

There’s a possibility that the player from that trade with the highest WAR in 2019 is Homer Bailey.

This is starting to remind me of the Sean Marshall situation. We're heading into May...back issues can be long lasting....I would be surprised if we see Wood at all this year.

    3.86 FIP
    0.4 fWAR

the only one with a positive fWAR from that trade.

Not saying it will happen, but it’s a possibility.

Not sure he would go for that unless he's really hurt, maybe he takes a discount on a longer (3-4 years) deal.

Pass. Reds don’t have many LTCs in them. Let’s stick to pitchers without back issues.

    Re: Alex Wood

I'm not second guessing the trade, assume Reds checked into Wood's health. And Puig is a major addition, so fine.

But Reds did give up two very good prospects, so I hope they get some use out of Wood this year. I'd hate to have another Ryan Madsen type situation. It's still early in the season, even June 1 would allow two months before the trade deadline.

So hope this thing turns around.

I agree, a reoccurring back issue is a huge red flag long term.
