    Re: Alex Wood

I dont give much credence to opponents records in individual series. If the Reds are hitting, and the pitching continues they can beat anybody. If the hitting continues to be Mendoza x 8 they wont beat anyone. I still think the offense is going to click at some point...getting impatient but it will come. My fear isnt the offense improving but the pitching regressing.

Wood 'feels good,' joins Reds for next step

Wood was nearing a rehab assignment in late April when he suffered a setback, his second. He went to Los Angeles for a second opinion, where he was examined by back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins.

“He kind of gave me peace of mind,” Wood said. “I shut [it] down for 3 1/2 weeks and was just on a strict rehab program and wasn’t throwing, which was the first time in the whole process that I had done that. The longest I had gone at any point was five days without doing anything to let it heal. That in itself was the biggest thing. Nothing crazy showed up on all the scans I had done ... it really was just back spasms and inflammation. Just getting on his rehab program and his core strengthening program did wonders, for sure. I feel really good.”

Wood’s throwing program has been solely on flat ground, but the hope is he could be pitching off a mound within a couple of weeks. Once Wood does complete a few bullpen sessions without issue, he could begin a rehab assignment in the Minor Leagues.

In the meantime, Wood will remain with the team and travel on road trips while continuing to throw.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

When being handled by Reds medical staff always use the 2nd opinion or eject button if possible.

To be fair he did go to a back specialist which the Reds probably don’t have one of those on staff.

I remember one time going out to the mound to talk with Bob Gibson. He told me to get back behind the batter, that the only thing I knew about pitching was that it was hard to hit.

Does this new timeline put him on track for around mid July or so?

Sounds like he could be in the minors by July 1st or so.
He'll likely need at least 3 starts.

Since there are no teams on the moon, I guess South Korea's far enough from Cincinnati to satisfy me.

Yeah, it just seems getting him fully up to speed will take a while.

He's missed a lot of time, and didn't really have a spring either.

    Re: Alex Wood

Interesting that this quote from the Enquirer article wasn't included in the Reds.com article, Wood seems to think he isn't too far off from rehab assignment.

“I’m kind of right in the middle of my rehab,” Wood said. “I haven’t looked at my exact schedule, but I’m probably 2 ½ weeks before going on an assignment and then being ready to go after that. I feel really good. Things have been going really, really well.

“With everything that I’ve had to go through up and to this point, I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself. I’m definitely on the way.”

2 1/2 weeks puts him on a rehab assignment June 17. If that plays out, he could be back in the rotation right after the all star break.

    Re: Alex Wood

I haven't seen a thread on this subject so I'll add the thought here. I really am starting to wonder what the plan is or should be for 2020 in the rotation. Right now it looks like they only have 3 spots filled: Castillo, Gray, Mahle. Subtract Roark from this rotation and the team takes a big step backwards in 2020.

    Do they resign Roark?
Does Wood return from injury well and do they resign him?
    Will Santillan be ready?
Or do they trade Gennett/Puig for a major league ready starter?

Absolutely try to resign Roark. He probably will take $12 to $14 a year for three years, but the guy is a competitor and class dude all day long. Want him in my clubhouse and on my bench every single day. My favorite Reds moment of the year (and it won't likely change) is when he gave Puig the hug after he misplayed and missed the line drive in a game earlier this year. Total class act and a great teammate. I am even good with him being pissed when he got taken out early a couple of starts ago. Bulldog!
Run screaming from Alex Wood. Nothing personal but the guy is hurt way too often.
Santillan won't be ready at the start of next year - mid-year seems more likely.
Trading Gennett or Puig for a good starter sounds solid to me, although they may dip their toe in the free agent market as they will have dollars available. They will need to have a decent run to end the year to really have a chance to woo a free agent pitcher here.

Do Scooter and Puig really have much trade value at this point?

    Re: Alex Wood

I actually want to re-sign Roark, I think he shores up the #4 spot nicely in the rotation. With Castillo, FA, Gray, Roark, Mahle. I think this could be a major strength moving forward in 2020. I just don't see Wood as being healthy for a full year. I would look at guys like Kuechel, Wheeler, Wacha to fill the opening spot in 2020. I think we have the funds to address SP/RP/RF next year.

    Re: Alex Wood

Wood may come back after the AS break and light it up. Too soon to tell what will happen with the rotation. Guys with ERA's of 3.50 may end up at 5.50. I like the looks of Gray and Roark, right now, but we'll see after 162.

i like roark a lot too, but that's too much money imo for what will be a pitcher entering years 33-35. i'd go 2 years, $20M.
