Re: I'd make Roster move with Duke

I thought this team had more money to spend, and adding at least one high leverage bullpen arm would've made a difference.
I was ok with adding Duke as a loogy with the caveat that they cut bait as soon as he struggled.
It's past that time now, imho.
(Referring to Jack Hannahan signing with a Korean team)
Since there are no teams on the moon, I guess South Korea's far enough from Cincinnati to satisfy me.

Hernandez ERA down to 3.86. Reed had bad game in AAA. But I'd go offense anyway.

In my opinion, another bad outing or two, and Duke has to be released. If you are familiar with Duke in recent years, he clearly appears to have arrived in Goodyear in worse shape than normal, and his ball has nothing going for it right now. Almost looks like batting practice. The truth is the guy had a good career, and may just be washed. We have better options in Louisville.

The 4 man bench is fine when you don't expect your starters to go beyond 6 innings.

I'd DFA Duke and start the last man in the bullpen auditions, lots of guys down in Louisville who can go long which is useful when you are yanking guys so early these days.

I'd give Sims his shot first. He's earned it with that K/9 ratio, and he was a top prospect in the past. If he flops, then try Reed or Romano. You rinse and repeat this until someone is decent and if none of them are, you make a trade in June or July if you think you are still competitive.

Well, the last few years, threads like this could have been started for nearly every pitcher on the roster. Down to one this year. Improvement.

I dunno. I think Bell really really likes to have a lefty specialist. For whatever reason, he likes that matchup. I bet they give Krol a look after Duke. I want to say Reed, but he’s been really struggling.

I fully agree he likes that.

And Peralta and Garrett aren't really LOOGYs (and shouldn't be used exclusively as such), but I think with the both of them on the roster he can manage to use them flexibly in one inning situations and situational ones, and I am OK with that even if they are not ideal as LOOGYs. If the Reds are competitive going forward they can acquire a good LOOGY in June or July for peanuts.

If Bell can't manage that? Well then he shouldn't be managing.

And to add, once again, Sims has just been killing it. If you can add a guy who is just straight up an effective reliever then you should. He's pitching like that guy. Is he that guy? I dunno, but maybe its time to find out.

I just saw on the Reds stats page that Zach's nickname is Dukie, which is appropriate because that is what he is pitching like. He is currently tied for the most games pitched in this year, that has got to stop. If he is to remain on the roster, it has got to be as the mop up man until he shows he can get batters out again.

I'd keep Sims starting at Louisville with next year in mind.

Me too. But it's time for Duke to go. I'd give Anthony Bass a look.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

I hope the Reds do not plan to put Sims in the rotation initially. Rookie starters need to be pretty special to succeed. We saw the Reds try and fail with guys like Stephenson, Reed, Romano.

Someone with Sims’ career history is probably better off beginning in the Reds’ bullpen. Then, see how he does, with starting on the table for the longer view.

You can experiment with rookie starters if you’re rebuilding. But if the goal is to win, go with surer bets in the 2019-20 rotation, including several veterans, with Sims in the pen when he’s ready to be promoted.

Has anybody else noticed that this is how a lot of teams bring up starters? I don’t remember a time when a prospective starter in the Reds org was brought up to cut his teeth in the bullpen. But I’ve seen the Cards, Cubs, and Pirates all do this.

    Maybe I’m mistaken?
