Because he was getting older and expensive, and so there was an opportunity to get a good player for much cheaper. This is exactly what the Patriots do so effectively. If that pick had worked out, the Bengals would have still had a very good OL with more money to spend on other positions. Spending that much money on an older player is a risk (which obviously worked out for the Rams), and so there's nothing wrong with the thought process. But the talent evaluation was clearly flawed.

It was a dumb move, and you don't need hindsight to come to that conclusion.
The fact that we do have hindsight now, and you're still defending it... is baffling.

The fact that the result was bad does not mean that the underlying thought process was. It's a dumb move because Ogbuechi was a bad pick. Criticize the Ogbuechi pick for sure. But getting younger and cheaper is what basically every team tries to do. The odds of Andrew Whitworth continuing to be awesome for multiple years after leaving the Bengals were low. He was the oldest lineman in the NFL last year and will be again this year. The Patriots are rightly considered the smartest organization in the NFL. There's zero chance that they would have signed him. The reality is that most guys' bodies break down at that point. For his sake, I'm glad that his didn't, but the odds were not with him.

You made my points better than I could have said.
Whit was a great lineman for the Bengals, probably should make the HOF just based off his tenure in Cincinnati. What he has done in LA probably puts the cherry on the top when talking about his career.
But you shouldn't count on OL who have played 11 years in the league to continue to operate at a successful level. Whit is an extreme outlier in that he was playing to the level he was during the tail end of his career with the Bengals.
What the Bengals tried to do was smart. They drafted Whit's replacement a year prior to him hitting free agency. A year prior to him entering his age 36 season in the NFL. Ideally you have either Ced or Fisher take over the LT spot when Whit's contract expired after the 2016 season. In doing that you are not paying big bucks to a 37 year old lineman and having more monies to spend elsewhere. It didn't work out, either to faulty evaluation, faulty development, or Ced just being a below average player. In the NFL you have to walk that fine line as a player ages. For every Whit that moves on and has success elsewhere, you will see guys like Willie, TJ, and Levi who had successful careers in Cincinnati who age poorly.

And usually with guys that age, when they go down, it goes down quickly. It was easier for the Rams to take the financial risk because they had a QB on a rookie contract. Credit to Whitworth that he's put in the work, plus gotten a bit lucky with injuries, and he's still been awesome. He seems like a great guy, and I hope he gets a Super Bowl this year.
But if the Bengals tied up a bunch of money in him and then he got hurt in his age 36 season, Bengals fans would have ripped the Bengals for betting against the odds on a guy that they fell in love with. That's what Castellini has done. The Reds have held on to guys that were fan favorites for too long, and it has significantly cost the Reds.

I think that was being hinted at for a while. Not great news.

The most putrid OL in the NFL gets worse. But Mikie has a shiny new 2nd round blocking tight end that was projected to be picked no higher than the 4th. 0 and 16.
It is 100% b.s. that the Bengals let Whitworth go because of age. You're a sucker if you keep buying into that. The Browns simply didn't want to pay the money. It felt to good in their own pockets. They have a long history of keeping old players who suck as long as it doesn't cost too much, including a Head Coach. Whitworth showed no signs of aging, in fact, the opposite. He was playing so well the Bengals weren't able to lowball him and instead decided to get rid of their Offensive Captain and team leader rather than pay him what he was worth. They had just finished doing the exact same thing to their Defensive Captain and true team leader, whom Marvin Lewis road his coattails to five seasons of success, Senor Michael Zimmer.
The Browns repeated patterns of cheapness continues forever to get a pass among gullible fans. No wonder the REDS get away with it, too.
There's another pattern here that continually gets ignored.

You're complaining both about the fact that the OL is bad and that the Bengals drafted a player to help the OL? There's a decent chance Boling wasn't even going to start this year. Many thought there was a decent chance he'd be cut after they drafted Michael Jordan. They'll miss his experience, but he's been slowed by injuries the last couple years.
The Bengals can be rightly criticized for being stingy, but they're usually not stingy with homegrown players. They've signed Dunlap, Geno, Bernard, Green, Dalton, Dre, Eifert, and maybe a few others to good long term deals. Whitworth is literally the oldest lineman in the NFL. The Bengals should be rightly criticized for either the terrible evaluation or terrible development of both Ogbuechi and Fisher. But choosing not to pay somebody for their declining years is the decision that good teams make all the time. You'll be right far more often than you'll be wrong when you decide not to sign the oldest lineman in the league
