    Avengers: Endgame Spoiler Thread

    Read at your own risk:

I didn’t care for the ending but I do understand why the Russo’s likely went with the angle they did.

I’d rather have seen Cap do the snap and Tony live and retire with his daughter. That said, I think dying is the only way for Tony to quit. They had to make it final.

Regarding Cap: he went back in time and likely erased a relationship/marriage in order to be with Peggy Carter.

That said, I’m still undecided how I really feel about the movie. Kinda felt like time travel was a joke. Kinda like the Russo’s decided “Screw it, we’ll leave it for Scott Derrickson to figure out in Dr Strange 2”.

I thought it was great. Everything Marvel does, done once more with a little extra emotional weight and some loving send offs. If you are a Marvel movie fan, I have to imagine you’d be very satisfied with this.

    Re: Avengers: Endgame Spoiler Thread

As I previously posted in the "non-spolier" thread on Endgame, I liked the film and its conclusion. Thanks BTW to WVRed for starting this thread.
Since watching the film yesterday I have read a ton of articles on the film and its various plot holes written by people who obviously are much more devoted to the MCU film series than I am. The articles made some sense and persuaded me that Endgame is inconsistent in its treatment of time travel.
All that said, Cap's decision to in effect retire and reunite with Peggy Carter was fine with me. After all Cap had done, I had no problem with his taking the chance to be with Peggy. I also read articles stating that in the comics and I guess in the TV series about Peggy Carter the name of her husband is never revealed, creating the possibility that the unnamed husband was always Steve Rogers. I liked that Cap got to live out his life with Peggy and thought it was a good way for him to depart the series.
Dying was probably the only way Tony Stark was ever going to leave the Avengers. Since Robert Downey Jr. was departing the series, Tony's death was a good though poignant way for his character to leave. Some of the significant characters almost had to die to give their efforts some emotional weight.
I would not have wanted another actor to replace either Downey or Chris Evans in roles for which they were perfectly cast and which they made iconic.
I was somewhat surprised by the death of Black Widow. I understand a future Black Widow film is in the works. Maybe it will be a flashback, but now that the Avengers have access to time travel, who knows.
I loved Chris Hemsworth's comedic turn as Thor in Endgame.
"Hey...Dad. Wanna Have A Catch?" Kevin Costner in "Field Of Dreams."

I really enjoyed it. I’m not a huge Marvel fan, I think I’ve seen like 6 of the movies probably, but they are always well done.

All the Thor stuff was hilarious. I’m sure there was plot holes with time travel, but whatever I thought it worked.

    Re: Avengers: Endgame Spoiler Thread

“Experienced” this movie with my son yesterday. I was an avid avengers comic reader as a preteenager and my son likes Thor comics and sees the avengers through that interest.
We both found this movie the most boring film we have seen together. It is another Disney-fication (even 10yr olds know about the Disney impact on film epics) of a legitimately interesting fantasy world.
(The rest is my opinion only, not my son’s.)
Cap’s journey into the past and his choice to alter his life seemed confusing at the time I saw it. The more I thought about it, it strikes me as inconsistent with Cap’s character. Didn’t he derive deep personal meaning from joining and leading the avengers as a surrogate family and as a surrogate mission?
This ending tells me no. He didn’t really believe in the avengers as family. Despite what he said repeatedly, He never got over Ms. Carter. He chose to alter the past, and replace a real family with kids that are now rendered non-existent in order to meet an emotional need that he never really addressed, despite many previous storylines. Selfless baby boomer Cap is reincarnated as selfish, Millenial Cap. Got to reach a new audience.

When Cap stayed in the past, all the millennials in my theater stood up and cheered. The rest of us sat there, shaking our heads. Staying in the past is socialism and Disney chose to turn the MCU into Venezuela.

It’s basically impossible to have a time travel story that is both easy for the audience to follow and free of plot holes. That’s why I avoid all dramatic movies that use it as a main plot device.

It’s also lazy, as it makes it easy for the protagonist to achieve their goals, or change past mistakes. And it deflated the importance of any other major plot points, since you can go back and change it if you have time travel.

It’s fine for comedies, because no one cares about plot holes in comedies, but for anything where the story matters, time travel is a lousy plot devise, imo.

That said, I have really enjoyed what they have done with the Marvel movies. They emphasized characters, storytelling, humor, emotional moments, and moral lessons, over action and fighting. I also loved that they picked directors with great storytelling ability over action directors. It really separated them from all other comic book movies, especially the lame DC ones (outside of Wonder Woman).

You are on-point. I kept thinking of “back to the future” during the movie, and then when Ant man referred to it, I thought that maybe I should see it again (at its release date, I thought back to the future was a silly but fun diversion).

Did you watch Shazam? It was about 9,000 times better than I expected and sort of the perfect pre-teen super hero movie.

Thanks. I have not but will eventually. I actually loved Shazam as a kid, and think Zach Levi is crazy underrated.

We saw Shazam last week and enjoyed it. It wasn't great but it was good and made me laugh often. I have also liked Zachary Levi since his days as "Chuck."

That’s why I always thought it was weird people were so upset after the end of Infinity War.

The time stone. It’s like “folks, all these characters are coming back.”

With that said, it’s a comic book movie. It’s not above using time travel as a plot device. This isn’t The Godfather. One of the characters is a wise-cracking raccoon that likes guns.

Did any of you notice that Steve said no to Sam when he asked about the ring?

That bothered me for a while after the movie. Steve knew Peggy got married and had kids. He wouldn't selfishly erase them, so either he was always the husband that Peggy never mentioned by name, or he stole a moment with her, and became Nomad, wandering the country. To get the shield, I figure he found Howard Stark, explained what he could to him and had another one built. Mjolnir was oddly missing though.

Black Widow is problematic, BUT I can see Guardians Vol. 3 with Thor (YES!!!) on a mission to reunite Gamora's soul with the current Gamora roaming the universe. Doing so may bring back Natasha, but after the Black Widow movie.

M'Baku has probably been ruling Wakanda for the last 5 years. So that movie is set.

At Tony's house, after the funeral when everyone is gathered, there is a tall kid alone on the right. Couldn't quite figure out who that was. Had to read that it was the kid in Iron Man 3, and that little attention to detail is why I love the Marvel movies. And why I am looking forward to Disney+ series Loki, Hawkeye and Wanda/Vision, who I assume will be repaired by Shuri and Professor Hulk.

Nice. I was also confused by who that 80s goth looking teenager was. Haha.
