I kinda like the strategy. With a shorter bench, those guys get a lot more playing time to stay fresh. And the longer bullpen with 4 lefties gives Bell the ability to avoid risk by pulling pitchers early, play match ups, pull relievers if they aren't sharp.

The downside is the lack of a pinch hitter in extra innings.

Using Peraza in LF helps get a rh bat out there. So what's more valuable to the team Ervin on the bench or an extra reliever?

I'm sure teams are already looking for a way around it, especially double switch addicts.

My tea leaves say otherwise..... Wooton has started every game he's appeared in. I think he is replacing AAA starter Despaigne who opted out of his contract yesterday. I think Reds will return to 13 pitchers. Duke has a 1.32 ERA in May. I don't think he is going anywhere.

On the radio today, they said that when asked, Reed said he was only here for the Dodger series. So your tea leaves are right again.

BTW, it could be worse. 34 year old Braves lefty Johnny Venters gave up 4 runs today in 2/3 of an inning. But none were earned, so he lowered his ERA to 17.36 !!

So who comes up when Reed goes back down? It can't be Van Meter for a few days. Ervin?

Good point. If I had to guess it would be Ervin. He's on the 40. And he's RH which would allow us to go all righty against a southpaw. But Ervin is not getting the job done in AAA. .228 Avg .649 OPS, and in a worse funk recently as he is 0 for his last 14.

You could make it Schebler temporarily. He's up to .265 and .714 OPS and on a 4 game hit streak. But you might hate to interrupt his swing recovery.

Brian O'Grady is a righty, and you could make room on the 40 by putting Blandino on the 60 Day DL. But he's also cooled off recently hitting .200 over his last 10 games.

So here's what I would do....... I'd bring up Jose Siri for a few days. He's right handed. He plays stellar CF so you can give Senzel a day off. He's on the 40. He's been hot recently hitting .314 over his last 10. .276 and .733 OPS overall. And is a stolen base threat. Second choice route for me would be O'Grady.

But I suspect Reds will go the easy route and make it Ervin.

One of the consequences of having 13-14 pitchers on the 25-man roster is the limited number of available spots for position players on the 40-man roster. The Reds have only 17 position players on the entire 40-man roster (counting Blandino but not counting Gennett). Many of us grew up in an era when the Reds had 15 position players on the 25-man roster, and the 1990 World Series roster had 16 position players (not counting Bill Doran, who was injured).
