Me thinks some went a bridge too far in writing Votto off.

Baseball is not today, nor yesterday nor what tomorrow might be when it comes to elite players.

The fact that the best hitter in Reds team history doesn't get the respect he deserves is a sad tale and says more about how the franchise delivers the game to the fans than anything else

This dude just hit his 1,800 hit. He deserves some credibility for this and nobody is accusing him of being Rob Deer.
But to call him anywhere close to the best hitter in team history is blasphemy.
Let's be honest with ourselves. Joey is closer to Ron Oester than he'll ever be to Pete Rose.

Oester? By that comment I'd almost wonder if we aren't being trolled.

Ron Oester's best season still isn't as good as Joey Votto struggling.

    Re: The future of Votto

I think Votto tried to change his swing early in the season to get his home run total back up, but it threw everything off. He was striking out a ton, and not walking as much as usual. It looks like he's just trying to hit line drives now and is having a vintage Votto run over the past month or so.

Just saw the highlight of him from yesterday and he looked more upright and a lot more relaxed at the plate. Looked like a guy waiting for a pitch to do damage with rather than one obsessed with fighting pitches off.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Yes, the guy with the career .689 OPS is Votto's closest comp. Just barely ahead of Sam Mejias.

    Re: The future of Votto

OPS+ 153 vs 118 Rose only had one season with an OPS+ higher than Votto's career average.
    BA 309 vs 303
    OBP 424 vs 375
    Slgging 525 vs 409
    OPS 949 v 804 Votto 9 seasons over 854 OPS vs 1 for Rose

In each Votto has the better number

Pete Rose is so overhyped, he is nowhere near the greatest Red. His career was longevity over anything else. He had ONE year with a 900 OPS and FIVE with a 600 OPS. He was a good player but not top five in Reds history. Also Votto's is 949 for his career.

Yeah even if he'd never gambled, he'd never make it in the HOF.

I love it when people pretend Votto is something other than the best BA guy any of us have ever seen play for the Reds.
