He was the later pick (11-40) I hoped they'd sign $249 k, shows Reds think he is a top prospect. That was the 5th highest bonus they paid to this years draftees.

My source doesn't know what any of the 6 NDFA's received. Though he/she speculated 5 of them likely got 10K or less, Free likely got closer to 125K.
The Reds can still go about 50K more over their pool - a max payout of about 175K$, which probably isn't enough to lure any of the remaining highschoolers, we'll know for sure within the next 2 weeks.
Posted all your numbers.

MLB had him ranked 170 which as Kinsm said is about the 6th round.
So the Reds got their 6th round pick, a guy projected for round 5, and their 12th rounder projected at 6. And got 2 college pitchers with no leverage and were unranked.
This all seems to be about signing Callihan and Hinds with enough to target a player not expected to sign after the top ten rounds. It's an interesting draft strategy, but it seems like the Reds had to employ it to get him. He seemingly wasn't going to sign for slot at round 6. But he'd take near round 6 money at 12 rather than head off to college. He may have cost himself $50K, but if he's really round 6 talent now, He might be round 2 talent after a year or two of JUCO.
I'm pretty happy with the pick and subsequent signing.
Dubito Ergo Cogito Ergo Sum.

Here's the most interesting thing about this draft for me. We signed ZERO HS pitchers. Zip, Zilch, Nada. I was watching to see we wouldn't take one in top 2 picks !
I personally love the strategy. I think part of the plan here is to improve the W/L ratios of our lower level teams by infusing college level talent on the mound.

College seniors do nothing for me.

The strategy is interesting. I question how much it is actually planned before the draft. In this year's draft, I suspect that the Reds knew that Hinds and Callihan were likely to be over slot and therefore they had to save the money on seniors. In other years, they could have their eye on a HS player with a strong college commitment that would keep other teams from drafting him. Thus, they could only lure him away from the commitment if they saved the money on seniors.
Evan Kravetz is an interesting pick. Reds don't usually draft seniors that high. My guess is they saw something they liked and didn't think he would be there later. Patrick Raby at 17th is also an interesting senior pick. He is a pitchability guy who had good stats as a 4 yr starter in the SEC. Seems comparable to Michael Byrne from last year's draft.
