Each of the Reds 2nd and 3rd round picks were projected in some mock drafts to be first round talents.
If the Reds need to now draft 7 college seniors to afford to sign those two guys, I'm just fine with that. The draft is about getting as many high end prospects as you can, and you get hose types very early in the draft.
The Reds have shown a good ability to utilize the draft in this fashion, getting Tyler Trammel who fell because of signability issues. IIRC, they had a pre-draft deal in place at a certain number. I believe they did the same thing for some other players, although I can't remember who LOL.

Callihan being a Gamecock commit just reminded me of Josiah Sightler last year, who spurned the Reds to go to SC. Early returns say it wasn't a great decision, but certainly he's got time to deliver on his promise there.

Gamecock signee slides to Round 3 of MLB draft
South Carolina baseball signee Tyler Callihan was chosen in the third round of the MLB Draft on Tuesday, picked 85th overall by the Cincinnati Reds. He is the first current or future Gamecock to be chosen.
Callihan has long been considered a top pro prospect and was included in virtually every mock draft of the first two rounds heading into Monday. Baseball America pegged him as the 37th-best prospect in the draft, and he was projected as high as a top-20 pick by some analysts, with a signing bonus worth upwards of $1 million.
However, he went unselected through the first 78 picks Monday night, leading to some speculation before he was picked that he might wind up coming to Carolina if his signing bonus is not as high as expected. The deadline for him to sign or not is July 15.

White Sox 4th round pick, at pick #110, select James Beard. He'll definitely be making some bread now!

Callihan seems like a dirt player. Maybe he's the sort of makeup guy Meador was talking about before the draft?

Johnson began his college career at the University of Georgia, but found himself stuck behind three infielders who could all go in the top five rounds in this year's Draft. So after his freshman season with the Bulldogs in 2018, he transferred to Chipola Junior College in Florida. The move has paid off as the infielder has put up big numbers and moved himself into top-five-round consideration this June. The switch-hitter has shown the ability to hit for average and power in junior college and it's his bat that will carry him. He has easy power from the left side of the plate and has a good right-handed swing as well, with more gap power from that side. A shortstop in high school, Johnson moved to second base at Chipola because they had a superior defender there and, to his credit, he was willing to do whatever was needed to make the team better. He has decent hands and a solid arm and he could get the chance to move back to shortstop after being drafted, though his somewhat limited range might make second the best spot for him long-term. A loaded Chipola squad had five players taken in the top 10 rounds in the 2017 Draft. This year's roster isn't as loaded, but Johnson, with a floor of an offensive-minded utility player and a ceiling as a bat-first regular at second base, should join that crop in hearing his name called at some point on Day 2.
