Minor League Game Thread 4/17/24 WEDNESDAY

DAYTONA (5-5) - The Tortugas are racing through their matinee affair today. Both teams seem to have lost their way home. They are scoreless in the 7th.

The Daytona starter, Brian Edgington, has weaved another excellent start, his 3rd in 3 trips to the mound. 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. This efforts dips his ERA for the season to 1.29. Tread carefully here, as Edgington is 25 years old.
Anyer Laureano, 21 years old, has come out of the pen and held the line for 2 innings so far. Laureano is sailing along with an ERA of 1.42 for the 'Tugas in '24.

Daytona has only managed: a single by Ricardo Cabrera, to go along with a single and a double by Dominic Pitelli. Pitteli is hitting .432 on the season.

LOUISVILLE (7-9) - Louisville is travelling to Des Moines to take on the Iowa Cubs. The Bats are putting their faith in Lyon Richardson. His last 2 starts have not justified that faith. But, the skills are still there, and I'm wagering that they show up big-time today. All 7 of Louisville's wins have been by 2 runs or less. They lost a heartbreaker last night by coughing up a 3-run lead in the 9th. Tony Santillan was racked for 4 runs in 2/3rds of an innin. Mike Ford homered twice in the defeat. Ian Gibaut made a rehabilition appearance and used 25 pitches to recored 2 outs. He's ready.

DAYTONA RECAP - Daytona spits the bit in a wild one. No runs for the 1st 10 innings. Daytona chases a ghost home in the top of the 11th, only to see Bradenton do the same. In the top of the 12th, Daytona gets a 2-run shot off of the bat Ricardo Cabrera (2). That should be enough, right? Nope. Alexander Johnson gives up 3 in the bottom of the inning, and the Tortugas slink back to the dugout as losers.

Jonah Hurney took over in the 8th, and pitches very well - 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K in 4 IP. His ERA shrank with that effort to 1.13. And then AJ took over. Johnson was a 36th round pick in 2019. He is throws hard, but has no idea which direction the ball is taking. 55 walks in 58 innings.

Ricardo Cabrera singled and homered (2). OPS - .984.
Dominic Pitelli singled and doubled twice.
Alfredo Duno singled for the final Daytona hit. OPS - 1.219.

The safe call at home at the end of the Daytona game was extremely questionable, but the camera view was from the upper deck, so it’s hard to definitively say.

    Cabrera looks nice.

Is Lyon broken? I'm not even sure he has a future as a big league reliever, but it's probably time to convert him.

DAYTON RECAP - The Dragons eke out a 3-2 win over the Fort Wayne Appleseeds.

Johnathan Harmon coughed up a pair of runs in the top of the 3rd, and that was all Fort Wayne got for the evening.
Luis Mey walked 3 runners in 1.1 innings, but kept them off the board.
Brody Jessee was nigh on perfect in 3.0 IP. He struck out8.
Brock Bell got the last out to garner the save.

    Ethan O'Donnell worked 3 walks.
Sal Stewart singled twice and walked. His batting average is now up to .333.
    Logan Tanner tripled and walked.
Hector Rodriguez knocked in 2 with a base hit.
    Victor Acosta tripled.

CHATTANOOGA RECAP - The Lookouts were tough-luck losers tonight. They scored 2 runs in the top of the 8th to snap a 2-2 tie, only to give up 3 in the bottom half of the inning.

Thomas Farr started and went 4 innings. He allowed 2 runs, but both were unearned. Farr fanned 5.
Donovan Benoit (1) and Carson Rudd (2.1) held steady until the 8th.
Jacob Heatherly was wild, allowing a hit and walking a pair.
Zach Maxwell came on with 2 runners on base, and allowed both to come home.

Austin Callahan stroked 2 of the 5 Lookout hits. He also walked, pushing his OPS up to .819.
    Justice Thompson singled and walked.
    Miguel Hernandez walked twice.

Aside from Austin Callahan (.819) and Jack Rogers (.773), every other Lookouts is OPSing .628 or lower.

The relief pitching across the Red farm (and majors) has struggled early.

Jessee has struck out 19 of the 34 batters he has faced while playing for Daytona. If he can bring the walks down (obviously a huge 'if'), the Reds might have something. It's not every day that you see someone strike out more than 21 hitters per 9 innings.
