I suspect that the vast majority of players do indeed give close to maximum effort during those 2+ hours, but that the effort put in between games varies much more among players, and can be a major determinant of their success.
I’m wondering how a player goes to the plate distracted, lethargic, just not feeling it, when the moment is so focused. It’s a long season, but not yet. Maybe it’s time to throw the bats in the shower and call everyone lollygaggers.

Just watch half the hitters in the lineup with a runner on and less than two. Or really anytime. Especially Peraza.

That should be the most focused time of all: “This is it. I’m the man.” How do you zone out then?

I wouldn't credit him with any special insight. Anybody with a pair of eyes can see his observations.

Marty does hold a certain fascination...I never thought it would be possible that a man could have such an enormous swelled head and yet remain alive.

I love how seeing the look on a player's face for 8-10 seconds after he makes an out is enough to determine his focus.

Like I said months ago, Bell would make a great neighbor. I'm old, so that's a compliment. He'd put me to sleep in the clubhouse...I'd need that nap room the Twinkies have.
I'm just curious if we could see an example of a sufficiently intense manager. I'm not saying you're wrong but Bell strikes me as similar tempermentally to basically every manager.
I'd be equally curious to see what a team that isn't supposedly flat emotionally would look like.

Fiery managers have fallen to the the wayside with the Sac Bunt and Kangaroo Court Fines.

I don't think Lays has anything to do with Marty.

When a team isn't playing well and losing, it looks like they are lethargic and going through the motions. Conversely when a team is winning and playing well they look energetic and look like they are playing hard. They probably looked great on Sunday when they were winning big.

I listened to Marty and Joe for 30+ years. I don't listen much anymore because Marty is a grouchy old man (granted he's doing games for a team that doesn't value winning) and Joe isn't there anymore. I do miss Marty & Joe (and good Reds baseball).
