I cannot emphasize enough how horrible a 15-month recovery plan is. We went through this with Homer Bailey.

I think he should start throwing late next year in extended Spring Training and face some internal guys in the Arizona instructional league in September or so. If no setbacks, maybe a stint in the AFL is in order. Minor league season ends at the end of August. I'd just skip it completely.

If Aquino has not played his way back on the prospect list, he's certainly played his way into contender for an OF spot next year, and maybe this year. Van Meter too. I honestly am starting to care less and less about the age of the breakthrough and more about the breakthrough itself.

Josh VanMeter is a 24 year old rookie with a .970 OPS in MLB. He's hitting for average, draws walks and has power. He's played 5 positions this year. Why wouldn't the Reds see him as a legit starter at the MLB level?

Aristides Aquino is 25 and dominating AAA. He's played a little CF but mostly RF. He has a cannon for an arm.

Puig could be traded. The emergence of these two guys and Phillip Ervin makes Puig, Winker and possibly Scooter available as trade pieces.

They aren't 19 year old phenoms, but production is production. Van Meter and Ervin are producing for the Reds. Aquino could very well be next.

how about we compare it to pitchers at or about the same age. how long did walker buehler sit out after having tommy john. wasn't it even a bit less than 15 months?

all good points. but i was talking specificially about the reds' "top" prospects. the guys who were ranked as the #1-5 prospects entering the season or thereabouts. guys like trammell, stephenson, santillan, india, vlad gutierrez.

i agree some back-end guys have emerged. although, i'm skeptical of aquino and o'grady with the triple-a balls being juiced, and both of them (especially o'grady) being old for their level. they also have awful k rates. i think they're both aaaa players, but i hope i'm wrong.

The recuperative powers between ages 19 and 29 seem negligible, if there's any at all. When Bailey was out after TJ and the Reds were trying to rush him back, we had lengthy discussions about TJ recovery times. You weren't here for it. All sorts of links and studies. It was exhaustive (not to mention exhausting). The upshot was you're playing with fire for anything under 18 months.

There's no upside in bringing Greene back quick (15 months) is there? Surely they'd take their time. I think they're more enlightened now .... maybe.

didn't the reds initially try and bring bailey back under a year after having tommy john surgery? then he got hurt again? under 12 months was absurd. i don't even remember the reds waiting 15 months after tommy john with homer.

Josiah Gray went another 5 scoreless last night. No walks. I know he’s gone, but this place would be going nuts over his performance this year

    Guess who has homered again?

    OPS sitting at 1.700!
