That's a lot of youth deaths, even if some were unnatural.
Tommy Hanson passed away shortly after he was out of the game too, another pitcher.

Foul play or suicide not suspected, according to this.

Always shocking to see an athlete in good health pass suddenly. Thurman Munson when I was a kid. After that no active player passed until Steve Olin and Tim Crews in '93. I was a big Olin fan.

Almost wonder if it’s just a natural death. I know a few people who have died that young. Could be OD too but I figured that would’ve leaked already.

Actually Lyman Bostock was shot after Munson died...I believe

I remember one time going out to the mound to talk with Bob Gibson. He told me to get back behind the batter, that the only thing I knew about pitching was that it was hard to hit.

Lyman Bostock died in 1978. Thurman Munson's plane crash was in 1979.

There was a tasteless joke going around at the time, that Munson was traded to the Angels.

The Reds canceled Opening Day in 96 when Umpire John McSherry collapsed on the field and later succumbed.

The video of that is on YouTube and it's pretty harrowing.

I remember that. Marge was the owner back then.

Crazy loss for baseball especially for the halos.

I'm playing mlb the show March to October with with the angels and I paused the game last night while we were in game 7 of the ALCS against boston with skaggs on the hill. I resumed the game tonight and my plan last night was to bring in a reliever but I couldn't give skaggs the short hook. He pitched a few more innings and got the W.

We're going to the world series now and I'm using him as my closer when he's not starting. It's the only thing I can do to show him some love.

    You'll be missed dude.

I read this, saw the age (27), and saw it from the perspective of "That's the age of my kids!". All I can say, as a parent, is that I don't know if I could handle something like this happening to one of my kids. I think it would almost destroy me because the grief would be unimaginable. So my heartfelt prayers go out to his parents and family at this time. I can only imagine what they are going through because, again, this is their kid.

I didn't see this until late last night. Very sad to see someone that young die. It's even more shocking when it's an athlete in the prime of their life. Life can be very fragile so live each day the best you can. RIP Tyler Skaggs.

If it was an enlarged heart--or anything in the cardiomyopathy family, then it likely was genetic in nature.
