    7/6/19 picking up the pieces....

Louisville had a chance to stretch their winning streak to 4 games, but really didn't. They decided to roll with Vladimir G. VG came into the contest with an ERA over 7.00, and it rose. That is hard to do. In any case, maybe they start a new streak today. The sun came up.

Starting pitcher will be.....drum roll......Alex Wood. According to MiLB.com anyway:
Left-hander Alex Wood (MLB Rehab, NR w/LOU) start for Los Murciélagos.
That will be of interest to watch.

RJ Alaniz has put up solid numbers since being claimed off waivers from Seattle. 2.77 ERA, 18/4 K/BB. Alaniz went undrafted out of high school in 2009, but was signed by the Astros for 160,000.

The Bats topped the century mark in home runs by clubbing a pair yesterday. They are on pace to hit 161, which would break the Bats team record of 160, and nearly eclipse the all-time franchise record of 166.

Juan 'Cheese' Graterol owns a 5-game hitting streak. He is 9-21 over that time (.429).

Aristides Aquino is in a slide - .179 over his last 10 games.

Narciso Crook, who seems to have been around forever in the organization but is still just 23, has lifted his OPS to .896. He has hit .417 over his last 10 contests.

Re: 7/6/19 picking up the pieces....

Chattanooga was derailed 8-4. They scored 2 in the 9th, and had the bases loaded with 2 down. But there was no joy in 'Nooga, mighty Ibandel has struck out.

Packy Naughton is back in business. He was nearly flawless in his last start. Naughton (3.18) is making a serious bid for Minor League Pitcher of the Year. Does that say more about Packy, or about the Reds' farm system? I can Naughton at the back end of a major-league rotation. Packy had Tommy John surgery during his junior year in high school.

Tony Santillan made his first start since being place on the injured list. He looked woeful, lasting just 2 innings. He walked 4 and did not strike out a batter.

While they don't have a bunch of hot bats individually this season, as a team the Lookouts are pretty awesome. Team batting-wise, they lead in RS, BA, OBP, SLG, OPS, TB, H and RBI. So, basically, every category that means something.

Ibandel Isabel needs a day off or two. Isabel wore the diamond sombrero last night - 5 at-bats - 5 Ks. Over his last 6 games, Ibandel has struck out multiple times in all of them, compiling a total of 16 strike outs in 6 games. He is in an 0-13 stretch. As good as he was in June (.979-OPS), that's how bad he has been in limited action in July (.389).

Re: 7/6/19 picking up the pieces....

Daytona dropped its second in a row to the St. Luciennes, and their 7th out of the last 9. This tailspin has sent the Tortugas to 6.5 games back. The silver lining is that Dunedin, the current division leader, won the first-half title. So, someone else will make the playoffs by default at this point. Mac Sceroler had a no-no going for 5 innings yesterday, until the 6th inning jumped up and bit him.

Andy Orewiler (3.29) will face off against the St. Lucie lineup today. He has his work cut out for him, as his opposing number made the FSL ASG. Orewiler has sparkled across his last ten starts, ringing up a 2.41 ERA.

Andy Sugilio had the day off yesterday, and is right back in the lineup today to work on lengthening his 10-game hitting streak. Since the beginning of 2017, Sugilio has been a .307 hitter as a Reds' farmhand. He has stolen 47 bases at a 72.3% rate over that same stretch.

Jonathan India is hitting just .179 over 14 games. He has been plunked 9 times. Ouch! He has not hit a home run in 89 plate appearances, and just 2 in his previous 181 trips to the plate. He has a little Jay Bruce in him.

Stuart Fairchild started the year off poorly. It appears that he was playing through a slight hamstring problem. Since the beginning of May, one would be hard-pressed to find a better hitter down on the farms: .314/.392/.547/.938. Oh, yeah, he has done practically all of this using a normal baseball in a pitcher's league.

Re: 7/6/19 picking up the pieces....

Dayton brought the wood last night, establishing season highs in runs, hits, doubles and extra base hits.

Lyon Richardson (4.71) has struck out 7 batters in 3 of his last 4 starts. The importance of throwing strikes is readily apparent after glancing at Lyon's numbers. When he is ahead in the count, his ERA is 3.67. Behind in the count, it is 6.53. Throw strikes!

Connor Bennett is unscored upon in his last 12 outings.

Pabel Manzanero leads the team with 8 home runs. In April he hit 3 in one game to join 3 others as the only Dragons to hit 3 bombs in one game. Who are they? Wily Mo Pena, Juan Francisco and Byron Wiley. Wily Mo went on the hit 84 jacks in the bigs. Juan Francisco hit 48. Bryon Wiley never made it past it to the Show.

Wiley is an interesting story. He raked in college (Kansas State), and he raked in the minors (.867 OPS), but was out of baseball after just 3 years in the minors. He did not play at all in 2011 or 2012. In 2013, he surfaced in Australia, playing for the Adelaide Bite. Later that same year, he played for the Florence Freedom. A couple or years in Independent ball followed. He never OPSd lower than .850 at any of those stops. His career ground to a halt playing for Rockland in the Canadian-American Association.
I could not find if he got injured or what. But, despite good numbers, his career never took off. Wiley down under.

Two straight Mustang's losses to Great Falls, and look who's back in the cellar? C'est la vie in the Pioneer League.

Nick Lodolo (0.00) will be making his 4th start for Billings today. He has faced 16 batters in limited action, yet has not walked a single one. Pretty good. I predict that one day Lodolo will pitch a no-hitter, and the headline with replace the three 'o's in his name with zeros. Fast forwarding ahead, it will look like this: L0D0L0. Book it. Nick was born in LaVerne, and Shirley everyone knew that. It is actually La Verne, but who's gonna quibble. The United Methodis Church in La Verne must be something special. The finale wedding scene from the movie, 'The Graduate', was filmed there. Another classic movie wedding scene occurred there - Wayne's World 2. Ewell Blackwell is from La Verne. bruceberenyi knew that. Nick Lodolo wears uniform #41. Tom Seaver word #41. Will history repeat for the Reds?

Johnnie Schneider has struck out 8 batter over his last 3 innings. Last season in Greeneville, Schneider punched out 15 batters in 25.2 innings. In Billings in 2019, he has done it in 9.0 innings.

Greeneville lost last night 5-1. All 5 runs were giving up in one inning. They have lost 2 straight, are safely ensconced in last place.

I have no idea who might be starting.

One pitcher who will not see action is Tyler Garbee the Magnificent. Tyler went 3.1 innings on Friday, walking nobody and fanning four. He is unscored upon, earned or otherwise, in 2019. That covers 5 appearances. Garbee is from Sewickly, PA, which must be a pretty ritzy area. People that live, or have lived, in Sewickly include the following: Mario Lemieux, Sydney Crosby, Franco Harris, Mike Tomczak, Chuck Knox and Chuck Noll. Sewickly's population reached a high in 1960 at around 6,000. The 2010 census shows a population of around 3,800. Shed no tears for the people of Sewickly, the median family income is approximately 118,000 dollars.

Christian Olivo's .326 batting average leads the team. It drops off precipitously.

Re: 7/6/19 picking up the pieces....

AZL-Reds tricked me last night. Trailing 15-1 going into the bottom of the 9th, I wrote their obituary. They scored 6 runs soon afterwards, and I apologize. Still, a loss is a loss is a loss. Speaking of losses, the team record is 5-10. In 7 of those 10 losses, they have allowed more than double runs. 7 of the losses have come by 7 runs or more.

To be determined will get the ball. The bar is pretty low, performance-wise, for AZL-Reds pitchers. TBD will fit right in. He may become the staff ace.

The team employed five pitchers on Friday. The respective ERAs were: 13.50/9.56/15.92/8.59/9.39.

    Wendell Mario is hitting .357.
Luis Lopez checks in at .360.

The DSL-Reds were leading by a slim 2-1 margin when they headed into the 9th. They added 5 insurance runs to put the game out of reach. The Dominican Reds are now 20-11.

Jose Franco pitched 5 innings of 1-hit baseball. He struck out 6. Franco's ERA is now a sterling 1.61.
After some tense moments in the 9th, Andry Cuveas came on to record his 8th save in 9 opportunities. Cuevas has a 2.21 ERA.

    Samuel Colmenarez walked twice.
Thomas Lora doubled and walked twice.
Jose Acosta singled twice and tripled. His average now sits at .420.
    Danny Vellojin tripled twice.
    Luis Cabrera singled and walked.

When does Jose Acosta get moved to the AZL? That .420 BA is screaming that he's ready.

C Daniel Vellojin has also been on a season-long hitting streak.

Both prospects have an OPS over 1.000.

Fairly unusual to move a DSL guy mid-season. My guess is 2020

Re: 7/6/19 picking up the pieces....

Greeneville jumps out 2-0 in the first. The Reds may have a live wire in Allan Cerda. His 6th home run takes the league lead in the Appalachian League, and rockets his OPS up over the 1.000 level.

Cerda is in just his second season in the Cincinnati organization. Last year at the age of 18, he raked down in the DSL, compiling a .841 OPS.

I don't know how many mound visits that they get in the Appalachian League, but they have visited Abril twice already here in the second. He has yielded a home run, and walked 2 batters as he is danger of coughing up that 2-run lead. He just walked a batter that came into the game hitting .048. Bases juiced with one out. And another mound visit. Maybe these are the catcher going out. Good news: Abril fanned a batter that was hitting .000 for 2019. And a ground ball to short ends the threat.

I'm assuming Rece Hinds is hurt but Doug said he was doing all the normal on field stuff like a week ago. It's very odd that he isnt playing. Would be nice to get an update on him.

Well Wood just got through first inning scoreless. Had some trouble throwing strikes. But was not holding his back as he walked to dugout.

Louisville is a rain delay. They trail 1-0 after 2 innings.

    Alex Wood's rehab debut is over. He threw 31 pitches/17 strikes. His line: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K.
