    Odd IT/ Wifi questions

Here is an odd scenario, see if anyone has ideas:

We are on a home well. Wifi is through a DSL line. This has been the same since we moved into this place three years ago. Nothing has changed with either system and no recent work on either. The past two months or so, whenever the pumps runs the wifi slows to a crawl to the point that not even the most basic of webpages will load. The pump usually runs for about 30 to 60 seconds at a time. About ten seconds or so after it stops, the wifi usually then returns to normal.

They are not on the same and the pump in the basement with wifi on the first floor..

    Any thoughts?

I know certain electronic devices like microwaves can emit a radio signal that interferes with a wifi signal. If your router is dual signal (2.4GHz and 5.0GHz) try setting up a network with the alternate frequency, connect to that one, and see if the problem solves itself.

The microwave will also slow it but not as badly. The odd thing is nothing has changed about wither system unless my kid switched a setting on the router. Grr

Even if the pump and router are not on the same circuit, they share the same ground and grounded neutral. If you know someone with a good Fluke meter, they may be able to check the noise on the line and ground. And, there is probably a ground strap going to a copper water line somewhere too, and over time corrosion can build up if they mistakenly used a galvanized clamp instead of copper. I suppose it could be a router setting, but it doesn't sound like it.

Water pumps have a start-up capacitor and a running capacitor. If the startup capacitor is faulty you would get quite a current draw. I don't think the the high draw would be maintained when the motor gets to operating speed. BTW, starter capacitors are a maintenance item to be replaced every few years.

Bernie Carbo's comment on a failing ground is a good one.

In any event, you really really need to get a qualified electrician to take a look at your home' electrical system soon.

    EDIT:

Call tomorrow. Please...so many houses burned down, so many lives lost due to electric faults.

So $750 later the issue appears to have been fixed. The issue was not with the water pump but rather the water heater/boiler. I'm not sure which one of the 5 expensive parts that got replaced was the problem but the hot water is getting to the whole house again and it is not messing up the wifi everytime it kicks in to heat the water.
