Well the "only hit against lefties" thing has been proving itself out ever since Winker went down.

You mean when he had walked a couple, plunked Dietrich and a pitcher that can’t hit on deck.....so Ervin barely checks his swing on a breaking ball 2 feet off the plate? Yeah, that might’ve been a sign he maybe not a great choice in that AB to decide 3-0

I think a steal attempt would have been idea here.

Ervin’s BABIP is starting to get in normal range. His batting average will soon be at his career minor league norm. Which will show the reason Ervin is considered by Lmost everyone to be a fourth OF at best.

I didn't see it, but it sounds like it might have been a coal barge. A common sight on the Allegheny River and the upper part of the Ohio River.

Fourth outfielders, ahead in the count, are generally better hitters than pitchers hitting below .100.

So it was more than reasonable to go with Ervin, ahead 3-0, instead of that pitcher. Even if Ervin is a fourth outfielder, which he may well be.

Not that Ervin should swing at ball four, but the take sign would be incorrect in that spot IMO.
It is not Defensive. It's smart.

Not sure how smart it is to load the bases up for a pitcher hitting under .100 with two outs.

Sounds to me like a lack of aggressive managing and giving away an opportunity.
