Bauer for Paxton makes more sense.

Same reason the reds traded for rentals. Avoids the long term contract.

Mahle to the Giants for Cueto, us to pay half his salary. I'd take that chance if the health reports are at all good for Johnny. Going in to 2020 with Mahle in the rotation is pure wishful thinking.

Don't think that makes sense. In fact if Kuechel hits open market I'd be very surprised if Yankees don't make a play for him

I bet you over next couple years Mahle is just as successful as Cueto at much lower cost.

    Not if Cueto's reasonably healthy.

And that's the rub. As a club you have to decide before it happens. Before it plays out. I'm saying before it plays out that Mahle will be just as successful at a way lower cost.

Cueto costs 21 mill a year. Mahle about $600K.

Give me Mahle and $20 Mill to spend on hitters.

Make him the PTBNL for Scooter (I know he can't be) & pay 80% of his remaining deal then I'll think about it. No way I'm giving up serious talent for him for the "privilege" of paying full freight.

    Re: 2020 Rotation

My proposal above was for us to send Mahle to the Giants, us to pay half of the salary, the Giants the other half. Of course I don't think we should pay him the full 21 million. But IMO if we think we're going to pitch Castillo, Gray, Bauer, Disco, and Mahle next year, 3rd in the division is the absolute ceiling. To do better is going to require some kind of risky deal, and given the Reds history with FA's I don't believe for a second they'll pay a better starting pitcher than a healthy Cueto. But maybe we'll only lose 86 and we can call that progress.

When you say deal him, remember it all depends on what we get back. For example if all you can get is a AA CF like what we got for Roark, do you still deal him?

No. I generally agree with FCB, but I think you've got to take some risks if we're going to be any good next year. That Bauer pitches well seems to me a plausible outcome, worth the risk at this point. I don't see them doing better in the FA market (and I'd also take the risk on Cueto at half salary if he's healthy). Those are the kinds of risks that might pay off because the upside could be substantial.

If Bauer can spit shine himself in the last few starts, he can be dealt for some offense.

Looks like the Reds want to see what Gausman can do as a starter.

    From CTrent Twitter:

    Updated #Reds rotation:

    Gausman
    Gray
    Mahle
    Castillo
    DeSclafani
    Bauer

Very glad to see Bauer has righted the ship somewhat.

I’d shut him down. He’s pitched enough this year.

    I’d agree with this.

I’d shut down Castillo and Gray as well.
