I will say one thing about Danny Darwin, who I do not know well. Last year, after he was promoted to the Reds, on their off days, when there was no Reds game, what do you think he was doing? Maybe just taking a night off to rest up from all the travel? Or just getting away from baseball for one day? Nope. He would make the one hour drive up to Dayton to watch their pitchers. It happened several times. That’s a guy who has been in pro ball since 1976 and is 63 years old. You can’t fake that kind of commitment.
I am not trying to play Devils Advocate because I have no idea if hiring the guy from Driveline and booting these veterans is the right move. No one else on Redszone knows either. In a year, I will have a real opinion. Hopefully I will say it was the best thing the Reds ever did. But I do know this. Darwin will likely be in a Triple A dugout next year. Or Double A. When his team plays the Reds affiliate, in the opposite dugout will be a pitching coach who is being supervised by a guy that has never stood on the mound and had to figure out how to get a good hitter out, or figure out a different way to get the hitter out if the first plan didn’t work. And Darwin will be standing in the other dugout, and he’s been watching how hitters approach at-bats for 40 years.
So I am not quite ready to say what a great day this is, quite yet. Time will tell.

Sure. Reds seem to really like him. He has a big Driveline connection, I think. He has very little coaching experience, but everyone is new at something once. But before that is known, Derek Johnson is the guy the Reds are putting at the top of the mountain. He is going to rebuild the system in his own reflection from a pitching side. The new hitting coach will likely be the same kind of guy on the other side.
Encouraging to see the FO embrace new lines of thought, but I'll be surprised if Boddy is in the org this time next year. He's a "difficult personality" to put it nicely. You can let that go with a player because of instant tangible results, much harder to do with coaches.
The FO has been super active less than 48 hours after the end of the regular season
Should be an interesting offseason
It does actually appear they are trying and some new ideas which in itself is a mini-miracle

I am looking forward to seeing what he tries to do. I would have expected him to be a “difficult personality” because you would really have to be super arrogant to get to where he has gotten as a guy that never played or coached with an actual team. You are going to face a lot of skepticism and you better be really sure of yourself.
On the other hand, big ego guys don’t work in player development. I have seen them too many times, guys like Sid Thrift and Ted Simmons. They are too interested in making sure they get the credit for every improvement in performance. They are all about themselves instead of being about making the players better, and they alienate the other coaches until it becomes toxic. Let’s hope none of that plays out.

The #Reds today announced that Caleb Cotham has been promoted to Major League Assistant Pitching Coach and Director of Pitching.
Additionally, Kyle Boddy (BO-dee) has been named the organization's Director of Pitching Initiatives/Pitching Coordinator.

My philosophy on coaches is I’m less concerned with their methodology and more concerned with their knowledge of the game and skill as a teacher. While I’d prefer coaches who are open to and knowledgeable of the most advanced methods, I’ll take a smart, skilled old school coach over a progressive coach with bad communication skills.
I worry if Darwin and others were let go because the front office wanted to clean house of all the old school coaches. I would rather they kept them and got them involved in the more progressive path they are taking. Maybe they left in their own because they didn’t want to work with this new system. But I think the winning system is one that includes both perspectives working together.

Our CF seems awful excited about a pitching coordinator...
