Very interesting regarding Wheeler. It does make some sense to tab what could have been Grandal money for a top pitching target now that their top hitting target is off the board. Wheeler is pretty damn good, but I kind of like the idea NeilHamburger threw out yesterday of heavily pursuing Cole Hamels.

why at his age would you have interest in him? Castillo, Gray and Wheeler for multiple years....all under 30 years old is much more preferred I would think?

He's left handed, he's still pretty good, and because of his age the number of years and money involved would be less than a player like Wheeler.

Apparently most teams are thinking the same thing though:

    Jayson Stark

Aside from Gerrit Cole, I'm not sure there's a more coveted FA starter right now than Cole Hamels.

His agent, John Boggs, told me they're now up to 14 teams that have checked in on Hamels.

Boggs wouldn't discuss teams or terms. But ...

Teams that have talked to him say he's seeking a 1-year, Donaldson-esque deal at a high AAV or a 2-year deal north of JA Happ (2 years, $34M). Also open to 3 years at a lower AAV.

Hamels has been linked to Phil & SD. But logical fits include Min, Angels, StL, Atl, Mil, Hou, etc

I would prefer Keuchel to either Hamels or Wheeler. DK is a GB machine who would play up in GAB.

Not really interested in pitching, unless it’s a backend bullpen guy. We tried the “win games 1-0” approach last year and it decidedly did not go very well. They have to improve the hitting, point blank.

I like him as well. IIRC, his demands were exorbitant last year, something on the order of 5/100. Any guess at what he might ask for this year? 3/50?

Derek Johnson working with Wheeler could be very interesting. His numbers haven't fully showed it, but there is ace potential in there.

I would be interested to see what Derek Johnson could do with Wheeler....but I agree at Keuchel would be a great option at Great American.

some of the sites that were projecting Grandal @ 3 years / $45 Million had Keuchel @ 3 years / $33 Million. Not sure if Grandal is a one off, or all of their estimates will trend low.

Rosenthal notes that in this scenario they'd still pursue hitting, just not at the Ozuna/Gregorius level. He name drops Moustakas as a guy they'd take a run at and add some other, less big names and load up on platoons.

Wheeler would be awesome. They could flip Disco, who would be a desirable cheap backend option for a lot of teams. Reds may be thinking about beyond 2020, crazy idea I know.

Sign Wheeler, trade Bauer or Disco for a bat.

Bauer in a deal for Betts?

Can’t imagine the Sox would go for it, given that trading Betts is almost entirely for salary purposes.

And I just can’t see them trading Bauer after bringing in his guys to run pretty much the whole organization in terms of pitching.

Here's an article explaining why the Reds should trade Luis Castillo to the Yankees:
    A) we want him and think we deserve him
    B) the Reds will like having these mediocre players because we don't want to have to give anything up to get him
(Referring to Jack Hannahan signing with a Korean team)
Since there are no teams on the moon, I guess South Korea's far enough from Cincinnati to satisfy me.

Remember when forum members were angrily saying in 2018 that Disco would never pitch again?

Given the bats available in free agency and Bauer's arb price, I still think signing a pitcher they can keep for multiple years and dealing Bauer for a bat is the best play. Bauer and Barnhart for Gary Sanchez.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!
