Glad to see we didn't lose Friedl. Don't think that means anything other than teams don't think he's far enough along, or a sure enough bet--especially coming off injury--to keep on the 26 man roster all year. Now I can vote for him over on the Minor League prospects poll. Still seems no lower than 10th or 12th on our board to me.

I assume Figueroa will be in A+ or higher this season.

As a reliever, he has some solid peripherals last year. In only 36 IP, a great K rate and a solid BB rate.

Not great scouting report-- low 90's fastball with a good change and offspeed pitch. Knows what he's doing on the mound.

    Perhaps a Boddy guy?

It's interesting that the Angels were who took our two players in the minor league portion of the draft.

I looked up Zack Brown seeing he's their #3 prospect and was far from impressed by his numbers.
He's a former 5th round pick who has always had a high whip and unimpressive K/9.

#Reds pro scouting director Rob Coughlin says Mark Payton's strong numbers vs. right-handed pitching gives the Rule 5 pick a chance to stick on the roster.

    But he won't.

I think he has a chance based on who we pick up in the OF. I'm convinced the reason Schebler is still on the 40 is because he's a lefty hitting outfielder with some punch. And against righties we'll be playing righthanders in CF and RF. The RF is a boom or bust guy and the CF had bad splits against righties. He might correct it....but he might not. It's why I think Dickerson makes sense for us.

So, I think him and Schebler are playing for the same (potential) spot.

Re: Rule 5 draft on Thurs

Payton seems to have put up decent on base numbers through out his minor league career, and a nice career batting average (for those who put stock in that particular stat). Obviously the power numbers are inflated, but they have had worse Rule 5 picks.

According to the ZiPS projections for 2020, the #Reds pick Mark Payton projects to have the most valuable season of any of the Rule 5 picks.

What's the "catch" with minor league Rule 5 guys? What do we have to do to retain them?

The Minor League Rule 5 Guys are ours. Their is no catch. The Only thing the Reds had to do was have space on their AAA roster at time of the draft and pay the Fee. The Reds are not required to keep them on their AAA Roster.

    https://www.baseballamerica.com/stor...-rule-5-draft/

Also, anyone who is on the 38-player Triple-A roster is protected from being picked in the minor league draft.

The minor league phase is much simpler--there are no eligibility rules that have to then be maintained. The player is drafted, the player's old organization is paid $24,500 (editor's note: this is updated after originally stating an incorrect figure) and immediately the player becomes a member of his new organization.
