If only opening day wasn't tomorrow.
Oh, wait...
Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. -- Carl Sagan (Pale Blue Dot)

Uhhh, there is SOMETHING to suggest they didn’t- he signed with another team for that amount!
While true that guys don’t always sign with the highest bidder, they usually do on a one year contract (location and city preferences aren’t as important if not in it for the long haul, and Cincy is definitely a hitters’ ballpark/good place to rebuild value on a one year deal). Regardless, there is definitely SOMETHING to suggest the Reds didn’t beat that offer.

Maybe Didi just wanted to play in Philly? That’s not all that far fetched. More goes into signing a FA than offering the most money.

I'm not thrilled with Galvis as the starting SS so hopefully the FO has something up their sleeve.

Or maybe the Reds have other plans/ targets. I don't get the Reds suck or aren't trying because they don't sign or trade for every player. They have a plan and maybe Didi was not part of it or they felt he was not worth that. None of us have any clue what is actually happening behind the scenes.

But the Reds could have bid $18 million. Would Didi have walked away from $4 million more? The Reds did play a role in this decision. They could have made a pre-emptive bid.
IMO this is all about the one-year decision. Reds want to do things for a multi-year window. They don’t want to bank solely on 2020. They weren’t entering a bidding war for one season.
I’m guessing Reds offered Didi a nice three year package. He wanted more, so he took the one year from Philly. He hopes to be in a higher range next off-season.

I am very sure playing fir Giardi before with the Yankees had alot to do with this. Now if the Reds had named Giardi as manager over Bell, hmm makes you wonder ....
