Final 4 for Akiyama. Would prefer Castellanos, Ozuna or Dickerson though.

I’m intrigued by Shogo. Just watched some videos, read about him.

He’s more of an all around player than the other candidates you mention. He can play CF, has won two Japanese gold gloves, seems to hit to all fields, good OBP. He’s 31 so his defense may be declining somewhat.

There’s a bigger risk with him, he’s obviously not played MLB before, but he is a very experienced player.

Why would signing him preclude the Reds from getting one of those other guys?

The reason Puig isn't as valuable as Castellanos is simple, Puig has deeper valleys and is prone to go on colder streaks. Look at the last two years month by month OPS

    Puig - .549, .970, .884, 1.018, .725, 1.073 / .615, .737, .950, .868, .731, .879
    Nick - .819, .968, .842, .701, .783, .999 / .781, .771, .847, .756, 1.098, .887

Hot/Cold streaks are not bound by the beginnings and ends of the month. I just picked the months to make it easy. It still is telling. In the 12 months Puig has OPS below .750 five times. Castellanos has done that just once. Twice Puig was way under .700. Casetllanos worst is .701. Nick does have four between .750 and .800 but to me it shows that he has what I've always believed to be the indicator of a very strong hitter, the ability to maintain a decent enough pulse to contribute when you're in a valley.

Obviously Puig is the stronger outfielder and provides a clubhouse dynamic but his overall value is not as close to Castellanos as some might think and consistency at the dish is the main reason.

If Reds sign Castellanos, I assume Winker will be traded. I don’t see both in the same defensive OF. Reds are already asking their pitchers to throw at GABP, they need to field an acceptable OF defense.

I thought Winker was better defensively last year, but he lacks the speed to cover much ground. Castellanos’ defensive metrics are pretty frightening, although they were a little better last season.

I have a sense that Reds care more about OF defense than some think. Krall mentioned it recently. They did pay $1 million for Jankowski.

But it doesn’t mean they will sign or trade for any particular player. It all depends on who they can get at fair value.

Seriously doubt we add 2 more outfielders at this point

Winker benefited from the move from RF to LF. I imagine Castellanos would be helped by it as well assuming we leave Aquino in RF if Nick were signed.

However, in Detroit Castellanos demanded that he play RF, and refused to play LF.

I couldn’t find anything specifically talking about a demand, but other than declining a move to first base a few seasons ago, this article makes him sound fairly willing to move positions:

It’s funny, I googled it and one of the first hits was a Tom Servo Redszone post about Cast.

I feel like that’s kind of a crappy allegation to throw out there and not back it up.
