Reds sign Wade Miley to 2y/$15m deal

Yeah it is. I mentioned it on page one but I'm surprised that he's getting almost $10 million less than Roark. Roark has been more steady over his career but the two of them have basically been the same type of the pitcher over the last two seasons, a backend starter always walking the line between throwing several shutout innings and getting lit up. That Miley is a lefty in an otherwise RH rotation is all the better.

I think some are giving Mahle way too much credit. I don’t think he’s a major league starter.

I agree with this, the twitter reds apologists are twisting themselves into knots right now trying to argue Mahle is actually good and it’s kinda cray. Dude had a 5.14 ERA last year. I get it’s not the most dependable stat, but folks lose me when they act like it’s the RBI of pitching.

Maybe this is just my dumb preference too, but I think I would’ve rather signed a higher upside type amongst the non tendered guys and let them duke it out, like a Taijuan Walker or someone like that. Maybe this doesn’t even preclude that from happening either, just spitballing here.

When it comes to Mahle, I have no idea what to think about him. He flashes potential, and then craps down his leg his next start out. I wouldn’t be surprised if he turned into a solid #3 type guy or maybe even better in a good year, I also wouldn’t be surprised if he can’t get ever get his ERA below 5. He’s quickly becoming a bullpen or whatever type guy either way though.

I'm all for adding Walker as well. If he lights it up in spring training and forces his way into the rotation, all the better.

A solid but unsexy signing. Solidifies the bottom end of the starting rotation.

Entirely too many times, the Reds have had dreck down there who have just hemorrhaged runs. And put undue stress on the bullpen. This puts a real MLB pitcher in the #5 slot. Ok by me.

I wanted the Reds to sign him last off season. Solid pickup that solidifies the rotation, and puts us in a better spot for 2021 as well.

Mahle’s OPS against first time through the order last year was .821, then it dropped to .697 2nd time. Not sure what that’s about, but it makes me wonder about how effective he could actually be as a reliever.

This was my thought initially, but I think it's still possible. I could see a trade for Price and then flipping Disco for a bat.

The guy pitched almost 170 innings for the Astros last year. I’d say that’s a solid deal for the Reds

Seems like a safe assumption, but I recall we all thought the Reds were out on Sonny last year because of the current crop of starters at that time and they still went out and got him. So we'll see.
