Re: Computer Plate Umps Allowed in New Labor Deal

Bob, I’m not gonna argue in favor of the three true outcomes game that baseball has become. Not a huge fan of the home run derby era but it’s not really much we can do about that one.

But I mean, seriously. I don’t watch major league baseball for life lessons. I watch it to see the best athletes at their particular skill set battle against each other and I want the victor to be declared based on who actually won - on each individual matchup and ultimately the individual games as the sum total of those matchups.

And let’s not pretend like robot umps are gonna be showing up at your local rec league field where 90% of young kids are playing. Youngsters playing baseball will still have plenty of chances to get negatively impacted by the human element you claim is so vital to the sport.

And PS, if you’re expecting Major League Baseball to teach your kid life lessons, you’re gonna be disappointed.

I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords.

This is going to take a while to perfect. It's going to be tough for fans to adjust to seeing this. You can have a breaking pitch that just nips the strike zone and people will go crazy because it will look like a ball. You have to realize that the strike zone is 3 dimensional. We usually only think of the height and width of the zone but there is the depth of the zone from the front to the back of the plate. It's a small detail but computers don't care. All they can figure is if it was in the zone at any point during the pitch.

This may be easier on umpires too. Theoretically speaking they don't have to wear the extra gear and could stand back further from the plate if all they have to do is call fair or foul and out or safe. They can still see if there's too much pine tar on the bat so if you're a fan of that sort of thing it may happen again.

Yea, that’s the thing here. It’s not like we’re automating umps out of a job here. We’re equipping them with the technology to be leaps and bounds better at their job and remove a degree of stress from it.

I do not understand the backlash.

Also, Chip, I appreciate the Simpsons reference. Forgot to mention that earlier.

You’ve clearly forgotten about the Votto-Bot.

He’s got some miles on him and could definitely use some re-calibration, maybe even a firmware update, but he still very much exists.

Re: Computer Plate Umps Allowed in New Labor Deal

If someone who doesn't want robot umps can give me a good reason why a ball that does not even cross over home plate should (or is ok to be) ever be called a strike I'm all ears.

I won't accept farcial answers like "let's have robot ball players".

Really guys, I mean it. Explain it.

I'm not onboard with the "life's not fair, it's a life lesson" reasoning. But I have no problem allowing that point of view. It speaks for itself. Does anyone else have an explanation?

You just about had that in the 90's and early 2000's with the rampant steriod use.

There isn't a reasonable answer, besides I don't like it.

There are a lot of issues here with software testing and source code control and release schedules and security of these systems in all 30 MLB parks. All stuff that a competent IT staff should be able to handle. But that all has to be executed with great discipline and diligence.

I’m glad they are doing this over multiple years to work through all the details. There are a lot to work out. It’s always the things you don’t know that you don’t know that get you.
