Re: 2019-2020: Who is the Reds #12 Prospect???

I've added Vlad Gutierrez and Ivan Johnson upon request.

This past season as a 19 year old, the switch hitting Acosta slashed .395 - .481 - .579 in 43 DSL games and an additional 10 AZL games. That stat line is a complete reversal of his 2018 DSL output: .199 - .321 - .284. He's yet to face true American pitching as most of the players in the AZL are now International signees brought stateside and defensively speaking he's put up some ugly numbers at thirdbase. It appears the Reds are going to try him at secondbase fulltime next season, which might fit best with his tweener physique.

(RHSP) Jose De Leon - The Dodgers 24th round draft selection in 2013 ($0.04M bonus - (JR) Southern University (Puerto Rico)). De Leon is only a few days shy of amassing 2 years of big league service time, but he still qualifies for these rankings because nearly all of that time was spent on the DL recovering from TJS. Jose had a 2W-1L record with a 3.54 ERA in 56 IP during the 2019 season as a 26 year old at the AAA level (in addition to a small cup of coffee in the bigs). Baseball America ranked him as a top 30 prospect in the minors after his excellent 2015 and 2016 seasons but he missed most of the 2017 season due to injury and finally underwent surgery for a turn UCL in his right elbow in March of 2018. The Reds might be best suited converting him to the bullpen, though he still has one option remaining so he could be stashed in the AAA rotation early on.

(OF) T.J. Friedl - The Reds signed Friedl as a Non-Drafted Free Agent in August 2016 ($0.73M bonus & a $0.45M overage fee - (RS-SO) University of Nevada (CA)). As as 23 year old, Friedl managed to hit .235 - .347 - .385 in 65 games at the AA level in 2019. He struggled with a right shoulder injury and tendinitis in his right ankle. Friedl's lean frame and linedrive approach probably won't allow for much more in-game power but his plus speed and keen eye at the plate still flash potential starter in the bigs. Though he came into the system as a centerfielder, due to Siri and Fairchild being ahead of him on the depth charts it appears that he will be playing primarily in the corners from here on out. Friedl went unprotected and ultimately non-selected in the recently completed Rule 5 draft.

(CF) Jameson Hannah - The Athletics 2nd round draft selection in 2018 ($1.80M bonus - (JR) Dallas Baptist University (TX)). In 492 PA's Hannah hit .274 - .339 - .369 as a 21 year old at the A+ level during the 2019 season. Jameson is a plus defender and has average to plus contact skills at the plate but he is small bodied which typically doesn't bode well for further power production. Dependent upon where Fairchild starts the 2020 season, Jameson may start the year back in A+, in which case he'd still be considered young for that level.

(RHRP) Ryan Hendrix - The Reds 5th round draft selection in 2016 ($0.41M bonus - (JR) Texas A&M University (TX)). Hendrix missed half of the 2019 season battling a right elbow strain but finished his age 24 season healthy at the AA level; 3W-0L and a 2.33 ERA in 19 IP. Ryan sports a 96 mph fastball and plus slider combination but like most fireballers he suffers from breakdown's in his command from time to time. He's recently been added to the Reds 40 man roster.

(RHRP) Joel Kuhnel - The Reds 11th round draft selection in 2016 ($0.13M bonus - (JR) University of Texas at Arlington (AZ)). The soon to be 25 year old power righty is big league ready; sporting a 100 mph fastball, plus slider, and a so-so changeup. Last season he had a 5W-3L-14SV record with a 2.18 ERA over 54 combined innings pitched at the AA and AAA levels (in addition he saw action in 11 big league games). In the past he has failed to control his heater and there were concerns about his conditioning. He still has three options remaining, so he doesn't have to lock down a 26 man roster spot this spring.

(CF) Jose Siri - The Reds signed Siri as an International Free Agent in September 2012 ($unk bonus - INT (Dominican Republic)). This past season as a 23 year old Siri hit a combined .237 - .300 - .357 in 101 AA games and an additional 30 AAA games. Siri broke out in 2017 at A Dayton but has struggled these past two seasons. He's a plus defender with good range and a strong accurate arm, thus should stick in CF for the foreseeable future. Additionally, he's got excellent bat speed which generates plenty of power but he's never had a great eye at the plate. Plate discipline is his Achilles heel, as he swings at a lot of balls/doesn't take enough pitches. Time is running out for Siri to regain his previous status as a blooming up and coming prospect, he'll enter 2020 with one remaining option year and Stuart Fairchild will be breathing down his neck, though as we've witnessed with Aquino - it can be done.

(RHSP) Vladimir Gutierrez - The Reds signed Vlad as an International Free Agent in September 2016 ($4.75M bonus & a $4.75M overage fee - INT (Cuba)). This past season as a 23 year old, the right handed starter pitched to a 5W-11L record with a 6.04 ERA in 27 AAA starts; though he was much better in the second half. Through his first 10 starts he carried an 8.43 ERA - over his final 17 starts he carried a 4.80 ERA. The homerun ball and lefties in particular were his kryptonite this past season, though neither were in 2018. His repertoire consists of a plus curveball, an average to plus mid 90 fastball, but his changeup is not currently big league ready. Many scouts see him as a middle reliever in the future, but there is still hope he sticks in the rotation.

(2B/SS) Ivan Johnson - The Reds 4th round draft selection in 2019 ($0.40M bonus - (SO) Chipola College (GA)). This past season as a 20 year old the switch hitter slashed .255 - .327 - .415 in 46 RK games. (In addition he hit .381 - .491 - .587 in 57 JUCO games.) Defensively he started at 33 games at shortstop and an additional 11 games at 2B in RK ball. Johnson is a quick runner with good reflexes on the basepaths, and has sound glovework but he may not have the range to stick at SS in the future.
---The 3 players drafted ahead of him by the Reds in 2019 are now in our top 11, mlbpipeline had Ivan listed 133rd on the top 2019 draft prospect list last June. As a sophomore at his suburban Atlanta highschool fellow Reds farmhand Tyler Stephenson was a senior.

Re: 2019-2020: Who is the Reds #12 Prospect???

I'm going to continue voting for 2019 draftees because I really liked the draft and maybe because we haven't seen as many of the warts. I have a hard time valuing relievers and I like to make my picks based upon who I would be more upset if the Reds traded, and I think I value Johnson the most on this list. I really like Jose De Leon, but we got him for near nothing, so it is hard to imagine his trade value is very high. The fact that Johnson hit well and played shortstop is enough for me at this point.

I agree with this mentality. But I would also consider who you would be most excited about if the Reds traded for an equivalent version of. I think there would be some optimism/excitement if we traded for a 2016 draft pick reliever with a 100 mph fastball who showed some flashes in a big league stint last year. Possibly moreso than a decent 4th rounder. Which is why Kuhnel gets my current vote.

Yeah it is a SSS, but .255 doesn't scream "hit very well" to me. I am not counting his HS BA, because he is a pro now.

Got to go with Friedl here. I’ll overlook his 2019 numbers, he wasn’t healthy last season, he hasn’t fallen that far in my estimation.

Still look at him as a solid fourth OF who plays some CF.

Close call with Kuhnel who shows promise but wasn’t convincing in his brief MLB debut. I’ll vote for Kuhnel next time (once Friedl picked), although Kunhnel may win this round w/o my vote.

It wasn't HS, though, it was JUCO, which is a definite step up. I also said he hit well, not very well, which is exemplified in his wRC+ of 104. Either way it is 210 PA in rookie ball, so not a lot can be made of it, other than he has a chance of sticking at short and a chance of hitting. Which, given the alternatives at this point, was enough for me.

I also somewhat understand the votes for Kuhnel given that he is more advanced and was legit great in 2018, but the lack of Ks in AA and then the lack of control at AAA and above were enough for me to lean Johnson.

Would consider adding Eric Yang soon. Had a breakout junior year as a catcher at UCSB and nice rookie year, .298/.428/.420

At this point it’s a tossup for me between multiple players.

Can you add the 16 yr old Braylon Minier? He received the highest international bonus the Reds gave this summer:$1.8 million.

I came here to say this. The ability to play shortstop combined with solid tools on a "baseball body" gives hope that he could develop into a regular.

I'll add him soon since he's been requested, but keep in mind that dollar amount doesn't mean production. The Reds gave CF'er Olivo a million dollars a few years ago when he was 16 and he's hit .205 - .248 - .306 w/ a 36% K/PA and has been equally terrible on the defensive end.

Agreed. It seems that there's more volatility with youth for a variety of reasons (Yorman Rodriguez and Juan Duran come to mind), but if Minier plays in the DSL, strikes out less than 20% of the time, has an OPS of over .800 and a fielding percentage over .930, I'll be thrilled. It's a total lottery ticket. With players that young, you're usually paying for the athleticism. It's been reported that Minier has a good "baseball body," but they said that about Victor Ruiz, too. All that said, if his tools are advanced for his age, I think it's something to get excited about.

I don't think either De Leon or Kuhnel should particularly be getting votes but I think De Leon is the better pitcher and this way we can hopefully start moving on from that crop of low ceiling players.

I still hold out “hope” for Jose Siri. In kind of a Disney way.
