Sad news in the baseball world...

Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. -- Carl Sagan (Pale Blue Dot)

Names discussed in Cards' Arenado bid (source)

The Cardinals and Rockies have begun exchanging names in their discussions about a blockbuster trade involving superstar Nolan Arenado, one source told MLB.com on Tuesday.

While it’s too early to tell if there is momentum toward a deal, the source said negotiations have advanced beyond a preliminary stage.

In order to move Arenado, the Rockies are insisting on a package that includes a combination of Major League talent and at least one prospect.
Names mentioned in the article as potentially being part of any deal:

    Dakota Hudson
    Jack Flaherty
    Dylan Carlson
    Nolan Gorman
    Matthew Liberatore
    Andrew Knizner
    Matt Carpenter

Man I hope they don't get Arenado. Love watching him play but not in a cards uniform.

I wonder if the Cardinals acquiring Arenado would make the FO a little more aggressive in the SS market...

    My weird thought...

If the Cardinals get Arenado, does his impact on their squad negate the Reds addition of Moose, Shogo, and Miley? Would the Reds need to do more to overcome the Cardinals gain if they land Nolan?

Of course. The Reds need to do more to overcome the Cardinals even if they don't acquire Arenado IMO. The Reds are better than last year. They aren't enough better to be better than the Cardinals.

They were better last year. We've improved slightly (thus far) and Arenado would outpace that.

    So yes.

Maybe they can catch the Astros in a weak moment and get Correa cheap for a prospect plus a 1st and 2nd round draft pick in 2020.

Regular round draft picks cannot be traded. The Reds can only trade their competitive balance pick for 2020.

White Sox sign Steve Cishek. Another late inning option off the board.

If the Cards land Arenado, it's a battle for second place in the Central. Reds need to do more, they're borderline playoff contenders now. Acquiring an impact shortstop would be a must for them to have a chance to overtake the Cards, IMO.

Quick Nolan Arenado update in yes-and-no form, per sources:

    - Yes, the Rockies and Cardinals are talking.
    - No, the talks haven't gone anywhere.
    - No, the exchange of names has not been productive.
    - Yes, it's still considered a long shot that Arenado is dealt in the short-term.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Alex Cora is out as Boston Red Sox manager following the fallout of the sign-stealing scandals that have enveloped baseball.
