    Luhnow and Hinch suspended for a year; subsequently fired

    Jeff Passan
    @JeffPassan

    BREAKING: Houston Astros GM Jeff Luhnow and manager AJ Hinch have been suspended for one year after an MLB investigation found the team used technology to cheat during its World Series-winning 2017 season, sources familiar with the punishment tell ESPN.
    “I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

    BREAKING: Per sources, MLB’s penalties for #Astros include:

    *One-year suspensions for GM Jeff Luhnow and manager AJ Hinch.

    *Losses of 1st and 2nd round draft picks in both 2020 and ‘21.

    *A fine of $5M.
    - - - Updated - - -

    With these penalties (and the relatively short "investigation), I'd say people must have just admitted what went on.

    No players were disciplined by Major League Baseball in the Astros' investigation. While Mets manager Carlos Beltran was part of it, he was a player at the time and thus was not suspended.

    Discipline for Red Sox manager Alex Cora is coming. It is going to be harsh, per sources.

    So, the Astros are the only team that did it? Or the only team that did it AND got caught?

    The first AND second round draft picks hurt too.

    Wonder how badly Boston is shaking right now?

    These penalties are a joke. They do nothing, absolutely nothing to prevent others from cheating just like the Astros, did.

    You get a World Series Banner and your price is a one year suspension, a fine, and the loss of a few draft picks.

    How insulting. Manfred is worse than Selig ever was.

    Jayson Stark
    @jaysonst

    In the last 100 years, only two other managers have been suspended for one year or longer:

    Pete Rose’s lifetime ban for gambling in 1989

    Leo Durocher’s one-year ban for inappropriate associations

    Now AJ Hinch joins that list, with this one-year suspension

    Cora has to be facing a one year suspension, at least.

    What do you want a professional sports league to do? String them up? Cut off an appendage?

    You're overlooking the shame and asterisk will be associated with the individuals and organization going forward.

    Is that enough to discourage future cheaters? Of course not. It's a wildly lucrative business, and there's little to be done to effectively eliminate cheaters. I think this is a pretty serious punishment. Sure beats the efforts of the NCAA.

    They should take those picks the Astros and prb the Red Sox will loose and have a lottery for the other teams to get a chance to get those picks.

    Lifetime bans for Hinch and Luhnow. They won a World Series and went to another by cheating. That is far worse than anything Pete Rose ever did. That is what the Black Sox players did, they they got lifetime bans.

    An Astro ban from the postseason for two seasons. Loss of top draft picks for five seasons. Similar to the death penalty that the NCAA places on certain teams that cheat.
