Luhnow and Hinch suspended for a year; subsequently fired

    Jeff Passan
    @JeffPassan

BREAKING: Houston Astros GM Jeff Luhnow and manager AJ Hinch have been suspended for one year after an MLB investigation found the team used technology to cheat during its World Series-winning 2017 season, sources familiar with the punishment tell ESPN.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

BREAKING: Per sources, MLB’s penalties for #Astros include:

*One-year suspensions for GM Jeff Luhnow and manager AJ Hinch.

*Losses of 1st and 2nd round draft picks in both 2020 and ‘21.

    *A fine of $5M.

With these penalties (and the relatively short "investigation), I'd say people must have just admitted what went on.

it may be that it is far more common then we care to believe.. perhaps this one came to light and they are doing there best to make it go away quick... can we really feel comfortable betting the ranch on this was a one time thing....

No players were disciplined by Major League Baseball in the Astros' investigation. While Mets manager Carlos Beltran was part of it, he was a player at the time and thus was not suspended.

Discipline for Red Sox manager Alex Cora is coming. It is going to be harsh, per sources.

So, the Astros are the only team that did it? Or the only team that did it AND got caught?

The first AND second round draft picks hurt too.

Wonder how badly Boston is shaking right now?

These penalties are a joke. They do nothing, absolutely nothing to prevent others from cheating just like the Astros, did.

You get a World Series Banner and your price is a one year suspension, a fine, and the loss of a few draft picks.

How insulting. Manfred is worse than Selig ever was.

What could Manfred and baseball have done?

Lifetime bans for Hinch and Luhnow. They won a World Series and went to another by cheating. That is far worse than anything Pete Rose ever did. That is what the Black Sox players did, they they got lifetime bans.

An Astro ban from the postseason for two seasons. Loss of top draft picks for five seasons. Similar to the death penalty that the NCAA places on certain teams that cheat.

Strip them of their championship. Make them take down the banner and return the rings.

I find the idea of stripping championships silly. The games have been played, you know who won and lost, and then years after the fact you are going to vacate a championship? Are we going to name the Dodgers 2017 WS Champs? Do they get to have a parade in LA?

The NCAA loves to vacate wins, but the reality is, it has no effect. Sure schools may not be able to hang a banner, coaches get wins stripped from their record, but the game happened, the coaches got paid, they got bonuses, and any effect is purely a dent to their pride.

If we are making the players return the rings, we are taking down banners, should we make everyone send back their WS Champs merch?

Honest question, was the use of technology illegal? Its kinda like the entire steroid discussion from the 90's, PED's were not illegal in the game of baseball. Put an asterix by the 2017 title, tell the story of the cheating, but to strip the title and pretend like it didn't happen, I can't buy that.

I'm curious here as well. I'm sure the answer is out there in plain sight. What rule was broken?

I like the idea of taking the banner down. It might not seem that significant but I think keeping it up would act as a symbol of justification and they don't deserve that.
