This means at least one (or probably 2) of Senzel, Winker, and Aquino are all but gone right? And if so, especially if Senzel is moving, a big trade must be in the works.

Big move by the FO. We're going into the season with some firepower. I know this signing makes a trade seem imminent with the outfielders we have, but I wouldn't mind rolling into the season with these guys to see how it shakes out before pulling the trigger on a trade. Either way I'm trusting our FO more so I'm positive about them taking the right approach

The opt out makes it seem like the Ozuna deal except Reds are on hook if he under-performs.

HATE the opt out after one year, but generally players take the opt out if they've blown up the year before. Castellanos does well enough to want to test the FA market likely bodes well for the Reds.

It takes a bit of the excitement out of it but I suppose look at it this way.

Wouldn’t we be over the moon if we had woke up today hearing we signed him for a 1 yr 16 M deal? Or the same deal with no opt-out?

Not shocked by the opt out after 2020. Judging by everything that's been said (and how he performed in Chicago) it seems like after years of losing in Detroit he's not willing to tie himself down to a team that hasn't been competing.

I'm fine with the opt-out after 1 year. If he rakes and opts-out, the Reds got a premium year for $16M and don't have to worry about him repeating it for 3 years.

If this were just a 1yr/$16M deal we'd all be pretty excited about it.

I'm expecting that with a one year opt out, his salary for the first year is less than $16M, but I guess we'll fine out. Usually the opt out salaries are higher than the initial ones.

Presumably this is what it took to get the deal done.

Given that Castellanos is 27, this is basically the Reds buying his prime. Excellent deal.

Per Heyman, deal contains at least one opt-out.
We see how few 3+ yr deals were given out this Winter and now the Reds have given out 3 of them.

I'm sorry but I'm not impressed. They've spent a lot of money but they have not upgraded their two biggest holes, SS and C and it's debatable whether they've upgraded CF. They've now got way too many OFers. If they make a beneficial trade that'll change my tune but as of now I'm not impressed. Loading up on Outfielders isn't going to get this team to the promise land

I say the first year is 16.

Yeah, no use looking a gift horse in the mouth. It was probably opt-out or no deal, so doing the opt-out is an easy call.

Not necessarily. The need to upgrade SS is less now. The Reds don't need to be desperate to do so if it's (a deal for a premium SS) not really there.

I would rather have Castellanos for 1 yr than no years. Good deal for Reds

I’m not sure who else you’d rather them sign at this point. There are no clear upgrades at C or SS on the free agent market. Loading up on OFers opens the possibility of acquiring one via the only means currently possible....trade.

There biggest hole was offense, and it's been upgraded, period.
