Are we respecting Galvis enough?

There's been a bunch of conversation this off-season about meeting to upgrade at the SS position and we currently have Freddy Galvis penciled in as the starter there.

While I agree the club should always be entertaining opportunities to upgrade, especially if lindor or seager are seemingly available, I don't think it should be lost that Galvis isn't a decent player.

Anyone else think we'll be just fine this year with Galvis as our starting SS?

I think if the Reds are too compete this year a lot of things have to go right for them (like Votto not deteriorating even more)...I also believe that they'll have to replace Galvis by the trade deadline in order to compete. The Reds can't have sub .300 OBP guys taking 500+ PA's this year.

I don’t think he is a disaster at the position, but ideally you don’t have him and Barnhart in your lineup. One of them is fine, it both isn’t ideal.

It depends on what kind of season he has. Not every player plays at the same level their entire careers. Some will have that one magical season and a lot of that sometimes depends on the rest of the team. On rare occasion everyone seems to gel all at once and under performers over perform. That's often how championships are won. He doesn't have to have a HOF season nor does any one particular player, but if they all have excellent seasons at the same time the odds go WAYYY up that they win a championship. Right now I like their odds. By the 2nd month of the season I might change my mind. We really can't worry how every other team is doing, just the Reds.

He's basically exactly what the board sees him as: A guy who won't kill you playing every day but who, if he's playing every day, is one of the guy's you most like to upgrade.

Galvis is fine for your 7th-8th place hitter. He adds good defense at short, switch hits, has power, good clubhouse guy, experienced, plays with energy. This isn’t an All Star Team, some of the players are gong to be about average. I have no problem with Galvis, particularly with no major financial commitment by the Reds.

I don’t think they have enough depth behind Galvis at short, but no problem with Freddie himself.

2012 Reds had 2 playing near everyday. A guy who isn’t a 300 opb guy isn’t going to kill the lineup especially if he has some pop and plays solid d. Galvis does both. Sure, I’d welcome an improvement, but Galvis isnt dead weight.
