    Re: The 2020 NFL Season

Given college portal, free agency and the mess that is becoming college football - will coaches soon need to bring lawyers and brand marketing people to recruiting visits while the player brings their parents, agent, brand person and a lawyer... seems the NFL of 2021, with the right organization and support structure, may be a less stressful gig than being a major college football coach

The NFL (unless you're Marvin Lewis and the Bengals) Head-Coaching gig is still a 4am to Midnight job, 7 days a week. That's just not close to the case in college. Night and day difference in difficulty level.

That's why Steve Spurrier failed in the early '00s.

I’d argue that college isn’t nowhere near as stressful as it was in the past.

Most of college football was recruiting and now the head coaches have recruiting coordinators that handle it. They might be involved with big time recruits trying to lock them down but there’s so many coaches/analysts now compared to the 90s.

So the Jags land Meyer, meaning Myer will most likely control the draft process (pick), which happens to be #1. What QB is Meyer taking? LOL

    I don’t think that’s a debate, and it’s not Fields.

It's obviously going to be Lawrence. Urban never coached Fields anyway.

I don't think that's true. At least in basketball, college coaches who go to the NBA like Stevens and Donovan don't want to go back to college because the NBA is less all-consuming. Hoiberg went back, but only after he couldn't get an NBA job. The NBA and NFL have a real offseason, whereas college never stops. And while NFL is much more competitive on a weekly basis, in college each game has much more importance. If OSU loses a game in the regular season, it's a failure and they may not make the playoffs. In the NFL, 6 losses still gets you to the playoffs.

In college, as soon as the season ends, recruiting picks up. And while yes, there are assistants that help manage a lot of that, the head coach is still doing a ton of work. The college head coach is essentially serving as the GM and Head Coach. The rosters are also double the size in college than NFL, so there is a lot more to manage, as well as the fact that college kids are generally less mature.

Being an NFL coach is extremely difficult. NFL schemes are a lot more complex, coaches are generally better, working with adults is different from working with teenagers, etc. I don't think one job is necessarily more or less stressful than the other, but they are just different stresses.

One of the biggest reasons Urban took the Jacksonville job is for Lawrence.

He mentioned how important that #1 overall pick was for his decision so believe me, he knows who he's taking. Oh and he's also called Lawrence "the best QB ever" which he did later clarify the comments to mean the best in CFB at that time.

It's pretty obvious he wants his shot at a Tom/Bill, Pat/Andy, Drew/Sean, Russ/Pete, Ben/Mike type situation with Lawrence.

Yeah, but the Jets have a decent defense already and anyone but Gase probably would have gone 6-10 or 7-9 with that roster

Wonder if that impacts possible #2 draft choice (Sewell or Wilson/Fields or trade down a few slots)

Dolphin fans seem to be on board the Smith train at #3 to get a much needed playmaker (not that it means anything).

Completely different job requirements in the NBA than the NFL.

Could not disagree more about your assessment of the job it takes to be Head Coach in the NFL. Working with an Owner has nothing in similarity as working with College Presidents and A.D.'s and Alumni. College Coach in the college ranks is a pretty cushy life. There's nothing cushy about being an NFL Head Coach (except for the Bengals because you don't have to win). You have to be insane to do it in the first place.
