    Opening Day and The Coronavirus

If this needs to be moved to the other board please do so. I really didn't know where to put this. As this thing continues to gain traction in the US and with NCAA conferences now making some changes, including some smaller schools not playing does anyone have a pulse of what the impact could be on Opening Day and the season as a whole?

It’s a question worth asking. I’m starting to plan a baseball trip for early May and wondering what will be going on, or not going on, by then.

My PhD defense is in London in May—already bought plane tickets and arranged for stay—but I’m anticipating it will most likely be relegated to a teleconference. And I kinda hope it will.

I also have OD tickets. From the way this is spreading, it’s hard to know what will happen in a few weeks. Washington State didn’t have much of anything a week ago and it’s exploding now—already implementing social distancing.

If I had to guess, we’ll be watching OD played in an empty stadium from our homes, and I’m not exaggerating. I hope I’m wrong, but the case in Harrison county, KY, is very alarming. All indications are that it was community-spread—meaning, this person did not travel, did not even qualify to test (twice!) and got it from someone else still in the community. This thing is more contagious than the flu.

Like I said, I hope I’m wrong, but this could be very bad.

    Opening Day and The Coronavirus

I work for a humongous health system in the PNW, the reaction that we are taking system wide to address this is pretty intense. Currently it’s in containment mode. That plus education on how it’s spread and who it affects the most is key. Unsure if it shuts the whole world down, but it really will depend on how communities manage the education methods needed to combat it.

In short I’d hope that anyone at risk limit their unnecessary crowd interactions while those who are healthy be diligent in following hygiene rules and they’re likely to avoid exposure

I think the big question is does this die out like the regular flu once the weather changes. If so, this thing probably only has a shelf life of another month or so until December. Opening Day would still be in question though.

Outdoor events are a far, far lesser concern than indoor events.

The World Health Organization says we don't know yet how heat and humidity affect the virus. “There is currently no data available on stability of 2019-nCoV on surfaces,” it says in its guidance on preventing infections.

I read that it will die in 100 plus heat, so maybe Phoenix in June is a good time to visit a game

I thought flu died out because people spend more time outdoors in temperate areas (like the US) during the northern hemisphere summer. However, the coronavirus that causes Covid-19 is spreading in tropical and subtropical areas right now which may indicate it spreads more easily than influenza and survives in warm areas as well.

    Same boat. I’ll be there.

UD will play Fri/Sun, assuming they beat their round 1 opponent.

The tourney won’t be played without fans.

Italy is plenty warm now and they just quarantined 11 Million people.

I'm wondering about March Madness, Opening Day too.

Everyone on the globe will die from it so it doesn't matter.

For now, at least, Major League Baseball expects to begin its season as planned.

On Monday, commissioner Rob Manfred is scheduled to speak to major-league owners about the coronavirus on a conference call. Team officials have been in communication with the league, but Monday will mark the first leaguewide call on the topic between the owners and the commissioner himself.

To this point, the league has given no indication that teams will need to delay the season or play games without fans present, five people with knowledge of the communications told The Athletic. All clubs have appointed a point person as they evaluate their specific situations, and plans can change as new information becomes available.

    HAHAHAHA!

As someone with a deeply handicapped immune system, I'm taking this very seriously. I just canceled a trip I was to lead to Costa Rica in 3 weeks. My neurologist told my flying would be likely be my final wish. It hits me in the wallet to the tune of $18K so far. None of this is a laughing matter to me.

I can understand your concern and if I was in your situation I would be also. What concerns me is how this is being sold as a crisis to all people regardless of their health or chance of contracting it. I fear the real crisis here is that the problem will be the over reaction. I have lived long enough to see the false crisises manufactured by the media and government. Remember Ebola just a few years ago? How about Y2K and the failure of all computers and our society being sent back to the Stone Age? The Aids crisis of the 80s that created a campaign to terrorize middle America that wasn't participating in risky behaviors? I am even old enough to remember Jimmy Carter addressing the country from the Oval Office while wearing a sweater and telling the nation to set their thermostats down to 65 to conserve energy because the world was running out of oil. I could go on but I am not going to drink the media Kool Aide and subscribe to panic
