    GM's EV Day thread

GM had an EV day today. Quite a lot of info to digest. 10 new vehicles, a new "skateboard" platform. Unfortunately they did not allow cameras. The vehicles will be revealed in individual announcements over next couple years.

A couple quick points as I digest the available info. There was a lot of thought that GM was going to have Cadillac be the electric leader, but 4 nameplates will be involved.

Chevy, Buick, GMC (including Hummer) and Cadillac.

    Re: GM's EV Day thread

GM has one current EV. The Chevy Bolt. Been a poor seller for several reasons. Mostly cost. They all list from about $38 to 42K. It's a fairly small car, with a plastic interior, and apparently really bad seats. It has a slow fast charge rate of 50 KWh. On the plus side it has 259 mile range, and most people that own one say it's great.

Here's the plan for the Bolt. First it stays at 50 Kw, so GM envisions this as a "city car". The 2021 Bolt will be not be built using their new skateboard. The seats are apparently much, much better. The interior is less plastic. Range should be about the same.

It will be unveiled this summer, a few will trickle out late this year, with spring 2021 when they start getting released in earnest.

Bolt EUV - This is a bigger Bolt. EUV stands for Electric Utility Vehicle. Same battery size, same Generation 2 skateboard, same fast charging speed. However home charging speed will be about 33% faster.

Here was spy video captured a year ago.

This car will have GM's new Super Cruise which is GM's version of Tesla's autopilot,

Announced this summer, most think released next summer.

    Re: GM's EV Day thread

After reading/watching a bunch of EV analysts, most came away fairly unimpressed. They said there was a lot of sizzle and very little steak. First of all the skateboard I mentioned is not really a skateboard. It's a battery pack system. It's key is it's flexibility. It can be deployed in numerous configurations and handle all different kind of batteries.

But there were not many hard figures given for technical details, prices, timelines, etc. GM had some very lofty goals. THey were talking about selling millions of EVs by 2025, but other than the Chevy's, the cars are going to be very high priced. And as always the key component is batteries.

So it's a wait and see game.

Honda says they are going to use GM's battery system to build 2 US models in 2024.

And the redesigned Bolt is now slipped a year because of Virus
