He’s also been consistently injured and consistently a replacement level player during his 3 seasons. Aquino could OPS .725-.750 and be more valuable than Winker at .825-.850

Winker does one thing well. He hits right handed pitching. He’s terrible, and that’s no exaggeration, terrible at every other aspect of the game. Combine that with, as you said, his affinity for the IL and you have a guy who just isn’t very good. Why he gets treated as a superstar by some here is crazy.

Now if he stays healthy, and he’s just decent against LHP, you have someone worth keeping, but even with all of that coming together, he still probably maxes out at 2 wins.

There’s one thread predicting a .920 OPS for him this year.

So? That doesn’t make him a star player, especially if he is mostly platooned. He had an .890 OPS against RHP last year and has a career .850 OPS against both RHP and LHP. It’s really not that unrealistic of a jump in OPS, especially with him entering his prime and the likelihood he’s going to be platooned more often.

His WAR gets killed by defensive metrics. Probably because he’s bad at defense. I get you have some kind of a personal crusade against the young man and have to continue saying how bad he is, but you go overboard IMHO. He gets on base at a near elite level, and the reds absolutely need people who know how to get on base.

Including minors and majors Winker has a career OBP of nearly .400, Aquino’s is around .300

    This is not rocket science.

That's a pretty big thing. If you are going to have just one thing as a baseball player, that's the thing to have

No not really. Not when you’re chronically injured and can only average fewer than 300 PA’s per season. Not when you’re so poor at every other aspect of the game that despite his prowess vs RHP, he’s still on average a replacement level player. Personally, I’d much rather have good all around players who can still contribute when they inevitably slump at the plate than oft injured one trick players who are otherwise useless. Winker is a platoon piece, yet many want him guaranteed 600 PA’s. If he earns it with improved play and sustained health, then great. His history shows it’s unlikely.

I think everyone seems to have accepted he’s a platoon player.

Chronically injured is another argument. He has not been a picture of health and that's less than ideal, for sure.

To say he "averages less than 300 PAs per season" is misleading. Adding up his 855 career PAs and dividing by 3 doesn't tell the story. He only had 137 PAs his first MLB season because he was in the minors for another 347 PAs.

He has been a 1 WAR player. That is not replacement level

"Winker is a platoon piece, yet many want him guaranteed 600 PAs" is a straw man argument. Even the biggest Winker defenders around here say he's a platoon player

We all prefer all around players but the Reds don't have the payroll for 13 all around position players. Would Winker be better cast as a DH? Sure. But the guy is an excellent hitter of RHP.

was reading through the thread and wondered if anyone was going to point this out. Claiming he is a fastball only pitcher when he absolutely crushed several breaking balls last season suggests you will literally say anything to support your preference. Maybe they confused Aquino with Pedro Cerrano?
