The club signs a former "bonus baby" to a minor-league contract, where he will provide depth at SS and 3B. In 1955, Tom Carroll took the roster spot on the Yankees formerly held by Bobby Brown, after Brown retired. After Carroll's playing career ended in 1960, he completed his college degree at Notre Dame, and found a job with the CIA, where he was an operations officer from 1961 to 1988.

The club signs the oldest living ex-baseball player, and last living member of the 1948 Cleveland Indians. Eddie Robinson is a left-handed hitting power hitter with a good OBP who will take over as the everyday starter at 1B. Bill Freehan takes over as the #1 catcher, while Del Crandall goes to the bench as the #2 catcher. (Crandall will also see some action as a backup for Robinson, with Freehan moving to 1B.) To open up a spot for Robinson on the 25-man active roster, the club options OF Angel Mangual to AAA. To make room for Robinson on the 40-man roster, the club designates C/1B/OF Adrian Garrett for assignment. The club also announces that RHP Vito Valentinetti and C/OF Phil Lombardi have accepted outright assignment to the minors.

Not recently deceased, but likely never honored by Cincinnati fans of the last 75 years, former Cincinnati RED, Eddie Grant, the only Major League baseball player who is buried in France (according to baseball-reference and their currently updated list of burial places of deceased major league players), died 103 years ago on October 5th, 1918, while serving in the battle of Argonne, the deadliest battle in WWI. He was 35 and played 10 years in the Majors. This was no ordinary man. He held a law degree from Harvard, too.
His 100-year obituary from the Washington Post: https://www.washingtonpost.com/sport...ars-ago-today/
“I believe there is no greater duty than I owe for being that which I am — an American citizen,’’ he wrote to a friend.
