Re: Some Obituaries of Recently Deceased Major Leaguers Part Two

The 2021 "Field of Dreams" Team makes a number of moves -- signing a two-time All-Star C to add to the bench strength, and two RHP's and another C for organizational depth.

    Transactions:
    Signed C Ray Fosse.
Optioned 1B Hal Breeden to AAA.
Signed RHP Chuck Hartenstein, and optioned him to AAA.
Designated RHP Cloyd Boyer and C/1B Tim Talton for assignment.

The club has been extremely busy over the last couple of days, signing two catchers and two right-handed relief pitchers. They sign two-time All-Star C Ray Fosse, who is added to the 25-man active roster as a third catcher behind Bill Freehan and Del Crandall. To make room for Fosse on the active roster, the club options 1B Hal Breeden to AAA, and to open up a spot on the 40-man roster, the club designates C/1B Tim Talton for assignment. The club also signs C Charlie Lindstrom to a minor-league contract for organizational depth.

On the pitching side, the club signs RHP Chuck Hartenstein and options him to AAA. To make room for Hartenstein on the 40-man roster, the club designates RHP Cloyd Boyer for assignment. The club also signs hard-throwing RHP Mike Overy to a minor-league contract.

In a separate transaction, the club also announces that C/1B/OF Adrian Garrett has accepted outright assignment to the minors.

The club signs a slugging OF to a minor-league contract to add to its organizational depth. Rich Barry played only 20 games for the Phillies in 1969 in his major-league career (and only nine games in the field -- all in LF), but he hit 280 home runs during a 15-year minor-league career.

Barry struck out to end the Dodgers/Phillies game August 19,1969 in his final MLB AB. Just a few days before I started my schooling in first grade. I saw that he was sold to Hawaii during the off season of 1969. Not a bad place to be sold to if you have to go back to the minors.

10/25/2021: Former Dodgers, A's, Tigers C Tim Thompson, age 97.

    https://www.lewistownsentinel.com/ob...is-e-thompson/

Charles "Tim" Thompson was the third-oldest living Major League Baseball player at the time of his death on October 25. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II, having piloted blimps on patrol missions in the Pacific Theater during WWII. According to Baseball Almanac, Thompson was the first big-league catcher to wear eyeglasses. His wife of 78 years, Lois, died two days later on October 27.

Sorry to see the news about Remy. I think of him primarily as a second baseman.

    Yup.

One game as a SS and one game as a RF.

All the rest were as a 2B.

On a related note, the rookies of the mid-70s seem to have some truly outstanding early career numbers, only to see them fade as their career wore on. Was that a case of Astroturf, injuries, and bad luck or does it have more to do with cocaine and internal struggles? Or perhaps something different?

In Jerry Remy's case, Astroturf would have had very little effect. Throughout his entire career, there were never more than four AL clubs (KC, SEA, TOR, and MIN) with Astroturf. In his first two seasons with the Angels, he would have played only nine games a season on it, as the Royals were the only club in the AL with artificial turf until 1977.

In 1977, the Blue Jays and Mariners joined the AL, so at that point Remy would have had 18-20 games a season on turf until the Twins got their new stadium in 1982. From 1982 to 1984, the Red Sox would play 24-25 games a year on the stuff .

    Probable Batting Order vs. RHP:
    Brown ss

    Freehan c
    Robinson 1b

    Stennett ss
    Terwilliger 2b

The club signs a left-handed hitting All-Star 2B with solid bat-on-ball skills and good speed, but not much power. Jerry Remy will immediately step in as the LH half of the 2B platoon. To make room for Remy on the 25-man active roster, the club options SS Coot Veal to AAA. This is a somewhat risky move, as it leaves the club without a true SS on the active roster. (Starting SS Bobby Brown is actually a 3B by trade, while displaced 2B Rennie Stennett will now become Brown's RH platoon partner at SS.) However, Veal's bat is such a liability that the club can no longer justify a roster spot for him. With Stennett penciled in to see action at SS vs. LHP, Wayne Terwilliger, who hits lefties much better than righties, will now be Remy's platoon partner at 2B. To make room for Remy on the 40-man roster, the club designates SS/2B Ron Samford for assignment.

Re: Some Obituaries of Recently Deceased Major Leaguers Part Two

Sorry to hear about Jerry Remy passing. I liked his broadcasting and would tune in quite a bit in the past when he was doing Red Sox games. IIRC, he was pretty good player for a long time with the Angels and Red Sox. RIP to the Remdog.

This 1978 Topps Jerry Remy card was among the very first packs of cards I ever bought, when I was an eight-year-old playing coach-pitch ball for the Yankees.
